Coach Morris' Signing Class Press Conference

I believe it's supposed to be today.....but can't find any evidence that it's available for the public to watch.

It still amazes me with all of the technology available, regardless of the venue, they cannot find a better method to hear the reporters questions 🤦‍♂️

Good info on the changes coming. Mentioned they are moving some players around. Talked about still needing K/P depth and that we are no deep at the LB position. Seems they will count on a least a couple of the true Freshmen contributing.

Spring practice starts Tuesday after Spring Break. Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday. Spring game around the 22nd of April

That is maddening. Morris seems a lot more comfortable speaking to the media than SL was. He sure loves him some bottled water though!

Think that had a lot to do with Morris being real comfortable speaking.

I know he's in his first year, and Seth was more upbeat his first few years, but it is definitely refreshing to hear him speak.

Making jokes, giving actual insight. He's got his coach talk that's for sure, but it at least feels genuine and exciting for the first time in years

But was it exciting and did it get the team fired up? From what I've read here, that is crucial for the HC at a press conference.

It was interesting to hear Morris speak. He came across as genuine and thoughtful during his responses to the media aka Brett Vito's questions. The thing that stuck out to me is Coach Morris wants the guys to be here in the spring and he doesn't think much about recruiting rankings. He said some of the best guys that have played for him over the years were low level recruits. During his first year at Incarnate Word, he signed one of the lowest rated classes ever. A lot of those guys were all conference players for him. Coach said that he's happy with the class, but ask him again in 3 years. He emphasized how corner and tackle were needs. Since we will have an additional safety on the field (3-3-5 scheme), we will need to eventually balance the roster (lose DL and add DBs). I personally expect a few more DL will jump in the portal after spring ball.  Coach also mentioned  Sifa Leota was moved to MLB. He is 6'2 235, and already has the frame to play the position.

 

A couple of quick notes from the press conference about some of the players (sorry if I missed anyone):

He spoke highly about Jayven Anderson. Credited Coach Jennings to the great relationship he developed. Also mentioned that he will be in contention for early playing time.

Evan Jackson, very athletic and plays multiple positions. Spoke about how he was also an all-district returner. Evan will start out at S.

Coach Morris told an interesting story about Brian Nelson. Brian didn't have a great junior year, but instead of transferring to another high school, he bet on himself and continued to improve. Brian had 7 ints and 27 offers after his senior season.

Taylor Starling's speed was brought up. He also talked about how he was a part of 2 back to back state championship teams. 

Kollin Lewis' athleticism was talked about. Kollin is a great basketball player, Coach Morris likes kids that play multiple sports. Kollin will play CB for us as well.

Trey Cleveland had multiple P5 transfer offers, but he wanted to play closer to home. Trey already knows a lot of the terminology and should be an instant plug and play kind of guy.

Larry Moore, long and athletic OT. Larry is currently at 280 and will need to add about 10 pounds this offseason.

Damon Youngblood, another 10.8 100 M guy that will come down hill and knock the mess out of you.

Phillip Hill, played a lot of ball at UNLV. He also played high school ball for the new ST Coordinator Drew Svoboda.

Chandler Rogers, he talked about his playing experience and athleticism. Also mentioned how he wanted to be closer to home.

Paula Vaipula, he talked about his playing experience at Georgia Tech. Said he should compete for playing time on the IOL. 

Matthew Moore, mentioned he will learn a lot from Larry Nixon.
