Some sleepers...I forget the name, but there was a sandwich shop directly across the street from NY Sub...they had some Turkey Tuesday deal, like maybe a full sub for $5 or so that I'd definitely cheat on NY Sub for. Mr. Chopsticks and Oriental Garden were sneaky favorites. Sweetwater's was a standard for chill dates, Greenhouse when you were actually trying to impress.

Don't know why the University location didn't have to change the name.  It's a franchise owned by a guy (Mike) who worked for Ken at the original when he was an NT student in the 80s, and decided he wanted to run his own place.  So he opened one near TWU.

A visit to the Texas pickup and you were home. Best burger and chicken fried and cold beer. In cement city just north of fouts field. Then a new place opened downtown on the square  Denton county Independent made a great burger too.

For those around in the late 1950's and early 1960's, Barlow's right off the square was a great place, a place that some of us athlete's could go, because we did not have much money to spend.  Great country food and the best peach cobbler  anywhere, plus Mr. Barlow was a wonderful man.

Denton Co. is still in operation and owned by Dave Barnett's son.  They are located at on Carroll between Sunset and University in a new location.

Glad to see cozy oaks from a few guys. This was my take a date to place.

the old sig epp house was down the street from sub hub. Pretty sure I helped with kenny’s retirement. When I did not like what the house was serving for dinner I took a walk and my friend Jeff Kruger worked there. He and his brother later opened a sub hub by uta

Lots of great memories here. One more was Char Burger or Charcoal Burger that was in an old Pizza Inn building near the original Mr Chopsticks and The Library bar. You could get a decent burger, fries and a beer for 5 bucks and watch a band on their very small stage. It might have been open for only a couple years in the late 1980’s.

The answer has to be Flying Tomato without question.  What represents NTSU / UNT than THE go to restaurant on Fry Street when Fry was the center of all things North Texas.  Start off at State Club with cheap pitchers, catch a band at Rick’s Place (drink of choice:  hurricane, kamikaze, or amaretto sour), then soak up all that booze with a slice or two from the Tomato.  Go home and pass out.  Great success.

There was a sandwich shop named Galligaskins that was across Ave C from New York Subway.  It was behind the Swensen’s Ice Cream and the old Burger King.  Galligaskins had good sandwiches and soups.

That's a great list, assuming Mercado Juarez is the Mexican place that I used to go to.

There was a Mexican restaurant (possibly 2 locations), and I think they were owned by 2 brothers.
One of the unique things about the place was they served a bowl of pickled veggies (cauliflower, carrots, mushrooms?,etc.) with every meal.  Is this that place?  I seem to recall it was located South of 380 and West of Carroll, maybe near Malone or Ector St., but that was 35+ yrs ago, so hard to remember.  There's also a place called El Matador that I now see in Denton and that name sounds familiar too, so maybe that was it.

I ate a LOT of chicken fried steaks (actually sandwiches) at the Texas Pickup and celebrated a lot of basketball wins in the late 80s at the State Club.  I also did a lot of damage on "all you can eat" catfish night (Wed?) at Captain D's on 380/Bonnie Brae. Also, ventured over to Krum for catfish and ribs a few times at the Clay Pot.

I don't think that's Mercado.  That was south of the square.

I miss Hooyahs close to campus. Those big ass burritos were great.

Crooked crust, Roosters, and Denton Co Hamburgers were my go to places.

Before there was the Loophole, there was a great restaurant in that space. Great for dates, for celebrations and parents coming in to see how their money was being spent. Great bar, long, shotgun style building that had this second level of dining space atop a wide staircase. The flavored ice tea was awesome too.

Other than that, The Tomato (I was still living in Denton in its heyday but it wasn't yet here while I was a student}, Texas Pickup with W Prairie Street Pub for post-meal American Shuffleboard and Jims Diner.

Clarifications:

Was Zeke's a fish place like the Fort Worth shop?

Denton Co Independent Hamburger: I thought Mike Barnett is Dave's brother. Mike also owns a good BBQ place in Justin and is opening another restaurant in Argyle soon.

Abbey Inn...not sure it was same location as Loophole though

Zeke's was a hamburger joint behind Maple Street Hall in the late 60's....used to eat there every Sunday night when dorm cafeterias were closed
