We HAVE a correct green, Pantone 356. It's Kelly Green, also known as Irish Green, the exact same shade of Green that Nike uses for all Marshall and Oregon uniforms and staffing gear. (Our staff likes to pretend that Nike doesn't make it)

Neon Green is also approved for "alternate" uniform colors per documentation approved by our Board of Regents, brown, gray, lavender, and black are not.

Black is an official secondary color. I have no problem with that, but it does drive me a little crazy that our athletics teams wear it almost as much a green.

Agree with your thoughts on the lack of green apparel from Nike. The last few years the selection has become non-existent. More and more stuff is only being offered in white, black, grey, and even forest green (barf).

Not every Mean Green alumnus has attended UNT but all of us have attended an iteration of North Texas whether that be the University of North Texas, North Texas State, or North Texas Normal. It is the name that rings common to us all. Don’t ditch North Texas for some ULM type BS.

And none of that matters. Branding has nothing to do with alum. We all know what UNT is or what North Texas is or what Denton or what the region of North Texas is. Branding is about outside of the geographic bubble recognition. UNT is the only route to go at this point. Again, UNT is a university located in the region of North Texas. We are UNT. Dallas, Highland Park, Grand Praire, Arlington, Fort Worth, Denton, McKinney, Krum, Decatur, Lewisville, South Dallas, Wax, Midlothian, 82 Corridor, Frisco/Plano, Grapvine, Gville, etc is North Texas. Again, we are UNT.

I think part of the challenge comes in how easy it is to say one versus the other, as silly as that sounds.   All of the examples you listed as initials are very long names to pronounce, while their initials are very quick.   North Texas vs UNT is nearly a wash and North Texas doesn’t have to be followed by an explanation.

North Texas doesn't have to be followed with an explanation? Go anywhere outside of North Texas and have a conversation with any casual. It absolutely does.

Absolutely.

He says this “Every respectable directional school or elongated name uses acronyms. UCF, SMU, FAU, ECU, UTEP, USC, etc.”

What he doesn’t consider is syllables.

Central Florida vs UCF. 5 vs 3

Southern Methodist vs SMU 5 vs 3

Florida Atlantic vs FAU 6 vs 3

East Carolina vs ECU 5 vs 3

Texas-El Paso vs UTEP 5 vs 3

Southern California vs USC 6/7 vs 3

The difference with us?

North Texas and UNT are both 3 syllables so why not use the more descriptive and historical term.

Because North Texas coincides with a giant populated region that is not just locally recognized as such, but nationally. We, the University of North Texas, is located in North Texas. We are NOT North Texas. We are IN North Texas. We are UNT. And yall wonder why tf branding is so awful.

When I've said just North Texas I've been asked if its a trade school. Multiple times.

Exactly. The local heads that only leave the North Texas region (if ever) to go to Destin in the summer or skiing in NM in the winter (if that) have no idea of how bad the branding outside of this bubble actually is.

I've truly had people ask me "where" when I've said North Texas in the past. As in, where in North Texas. Since, and for running years, I only ever say UNT. That basic 'U' in front of the NT creates legitimacy.

Either they are screwing with you or they are dumber than a rock.  Even if they were unaware of  North Texas the implied is a college or University.

I disagree. NCTC is a comm college/trade school. Using the logic by some on here, they very well could ans should start referring to themselves as North Texas. I mean, it's in the name, right? RIGHT?

I disagree, I haven’t lived in DFW in more than a decade and North Texas is always more easily understood than UNT in my personal experience.

So SMU wants to be Dallas’ team but our being the university for the greater North Texas region is a bad thing?

OMG it must be the off season.

Uniforms anyone?

Just pick something and stick with it. Directional schools are not just identified by their initials. USC also goes by Southern Cal without issue. I haven’t lived in the DFW area for almost twenty years and when people ask me where I attended I always answer North Texas. Nobody has ever questioned that. I never refer to us as UNT and it has never been an issue. It isn’t that I don’t care for UNT, but North Texas just rolls off the tongue.

The biggest mistake, IMHO, we ever made was going away from the Fry era eagle and the apple/dark green combo. It was unique, still is, and the color scheme stood out as something different. Besides being a great coach, Fry was a marketing genius. We have lacked that since he left. It is like we are afraid to think outside the box and that is what is needed. Be bold, embrace it and stick with it.

That's your experience. I am not a Texan. I regularly travel to Cali, Florida, Tenn, Arkansas and Florida multiple times a year to all places. Typically, no one has any idea what I am referring to when I use to say North Texas. I have had people ask me on multiple occasions where in North Texas did I go to school. We are severely underbranded. And using one of the largest metropolitan regions in the country as our college name is not a good platform in an attempt to grow a brand. Just because something always has been doesn't mean it always should be. But, again, this is my experience.

No, it's not a bad theory to try to reach that as a goal in substance, of course. In school name, yes, that's a bad thing. We can still be the University of North Texas in name and geography.

“North Texas” is literally the only thing that has been in every name the school has ever had, from North Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute in 1890 all the way up to today’s University of North Texas.

I get it, new generations want to see new and “hip” changes.   But traditions, like facts, aren’t about your feelings.

Yes.  I didn't graduate from UNT, I graduated from North Texas.

For 123 years we have been "North Texas"!  Don't throw away more of our history!

If you asked someone where they went to school and they said Southern Cal and someone took that to be a trade school they would be a moron same with North Texas. I travel a bunch and have never heard such silliness.

The current name of the university you graduated from is the University of North Texas.

The first line of OUR fight song is...

Let's give a cheer for U of NT!

On the pants of of your football teams uniform all have UNT.

The primary logo used by your athletic teams on ESPN has a diving eagle with UNT spelt out beside it.

I travel multiple times a year for business as well. Typically to California, Indiana, Arkansas, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Mississippi. In my experience, I have never had someone ask where in North Texas when I tell them I attended North Texas. I would be curious to know what the typical response is, the one you have received or mine.

Yeah, I guess the majority here grace their presence among well articulated people of academia. I swing through the places of peasants.

Glory to the Green and White

Singing glory to the green,
Singing glory to the white,
For we know our university
Is striving for the right.
Down the corridor of years
We’ll forget the joys and tears,
But North Texas, North Texas, we love!
