Any Iowa State DB’s in the portal?

Would like to have had a Texas connection and/or DC experience at a known university.

Anyone know if we’re looking at 3 or 4 man front?

In addition to the previously mentioned DB that hit the portal 2 days ago, there’s a LB and a S that are still available in the portal.

Here are all the Iowa State defenders in the portal:

from Texas:

https://247sports.com/Player/Jayden-Gray-46100308/  (He was offered by UNT out of high school. Looks like he has been liking UNT related tweets so would not be surprised to see him transfer here!)

Not from Texas:

3-3-3 with 2 safeties.

Their d  lineman shoot the gaps (weakest position) and is cleaned up by linebackers and safeties.

Come back KD!

i think this could be an ideal and great set up for our defense… believe there is more talent to pull from for LB/Safety in the state of TX

Before the TCU loss where the Iowa St defense gave up 62 points, their defense was averaging 16.5 points a game. If our defense could do that, man we would win so many games.

Iowa St struggles this past year were on offense, not defense. I think this will be a really good hire.

I agree, and I will point out playing in the Big12 you will have a week or two that need to be overlooked and doing it vs a CFP team that’s in top 4 in country is a good team to do it against. Also does not hurt that TCU had a Heisman Candidate at QB and a WR who could be a 1st Rd pick, and was lead by an OC we considered for our HC gig

Safety is a TX kid as well… 6-0 200lb safety… have not looked at the tape but I would have interest potential.

If I’m changing up defenses, I hope our new DC is considering bringing these guys in… just having an idea of the defense he will likely run will greatly help.. even if they are rotating pieces, having knowledge of system and term knowledge will greatly help guys new to scheme

2008 W&J Surrendered 23.5 PPG

High of 63 & Low of 7 (3 times)

2009 W&J Surrendered 13.7 PPG

High of 55 & Low of 0 (2 times)

2010 W&J Surrendered 20.5 PPG

High of 41 & Low of 6

Looks to be a good hire, granted this was division 3 but to do this while being so young and coupling that with evidence of defenses improving when he's there is extremely impressive. He would of gotten an opportunity somewhere glad Morris sees this and it's here. Welcome Coach Caponi. Morris is not only saying the right things but doing the right things.

He was a Defensive Coordinator at Washington & Jefferson.  No clue how his defenses did, but he's been on some pretty solid staff's so I'll take it.

No college DC experience is troubling, and I am concerned that he hasn’t recruited to non-P5 programs. I hoped  for an experienced DC to balance out all the youth on this staff.

Honestly this seems like an underwhelming hire.

I  was thinking more like Ewan McGregor, aka Obi Wan Kenobi:

Is it just me, or does Obi-Wan look so different in each one of the prequels? I swear he looks like a different person in every movie. : r/StarWars

Friendly reminder that not every white guy with a clean beard looks like McGregor's Obi Wan.

This one isn't that close.  Sorry dude.

While I agree i would prefer a seasoned play caller, let’s allow him to add his staff.. I’m sure a few of them will ex coords or vet coaches..

also, I like to think with him being the DB coach in the Big12 he has held some say in gameplaying

I like the possibilities of this guy. But for those wanting to bring in lots of guys via the Portal, do we have many scholarships available? I thought we were limited this year.

Well if some leave we can replace them.

Not only was Gray offered by us, but he was committed to UNT for a while.

Another very solid hire.  Coach Morris continues to check every box our program and culture need.

Great to hear from you again Rick. I wondered where you were.

Don’t say his name too loud or McCarney will return

I saw a Gray Porsche hauling ass on 35 from Denton this morning. License plate said GRYGUUS. Started laughing and wondered if it was ol’ Coach McCarney driving it.

He has definitely been part of some solid defenses in the P5 ranks.

I was curious about his track record as a DC at Washington & Jefferson. I don't know anything about the competition, but aside from a couple of blowouts, the points scored against them seems very respectable after a quick glance.

If you look at the points scored against his defense, this is how each season averages out:

  • 2008: 23.46 PPG
  • 2009: 13.81 PPG
  • 2010: 20.45 PPG

The 63-7 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor in 2008 and 55-0 loss to Mount Union in 2009 skew the averages for those two years. I have no idea what happened in those games, but if you remove the outliers from each season (the game with the highest points scored against and the game with the lowest points scored against), here's how each season averages out:

  • 2008: 21.36 PPG
  • 2009: 10 PPG
  • 2010: 21.1 PPG

All this to say, if Caponi can get our defense to perform this way in the AAC...and Morris gets his top-scoring offense rolling...we just might have some phenomenal football seasons ahead of us!
