DRC: UNT Sunday column -- Littrell, players leave little doubt, a title is the goal this season, not just playing in a bowl

If you read this article, it is painfully obvious that Brett reads this board.

To recap:

- North Texas is bowl eligible…that’s a real accomplishment for a program like lowly North Texas

- SL lost bowl games because he magically drew the 1985 Bears in each one of them

- Aune is unfairly compared to Mason Fine…and did I mention he’s thrown for a lot of yards and TD’s (with no mention of the INT’s)?

I always thought once WE become bowl eligible that was like winning the national championship if you were at another program. He must’ve been shocked that our players would actually want more than that.   Because as he pointed out for the 1,000th time….our history and stuff….

Full disclosure:
I honestly thought the RR’s would clip our wings big time in the AlamoDome last month, but today we are just one play in that game from leading the entire CUSA race.  I think UAB will be tough because they seem to have our number.  Texas is in our school name & that seems to create extra effort from some non-Texas opponents.

I’m even feeling better about our going to a much tougher American next year although we know recruiting big, fast players will be very necessary.

Homecoming was a blast & attendance fair, but we know how that can be corrected.

Denton Rancher the late Rex Cauble gave UNT this classic car.  We had a MG Club BBQ at his arena years ago & Rex personally gave a handful of us a mini-tour & a chance to meet Cutter Bill—his famous cutting horse.  CB was in his last days.
(I’m surprised Hollywood hasn’t made a movie about Cauble).

hmmm no comment from Brett on the 13 game OOC losing streak to FBS teams, but hey we are big fish in a Koi pond called CUSA.

Considering 3 of the bowls were either losing record or last year have a big donor create a bowl game for a 6-6 team no one wanted

Vito has his own agendas.

Aune has a better TD:INT ratio this season than Fine had the year he set the record for TD passes in a season.

Which one had the better Win:Loss ratio?

If we should be fortunate to win the conference championship we would be going to the New Orleans Bowl to face the Sun Belt winner...likely Coastal Carolina.  If we should possibly lose again to UTSA we would probably go to the New Mexico Bowl again.  If their goal is to win a bowl game frankly they would be a little better off to go to Albuquerque again.  I must admit however, that I'm more juiced to deprive the Roadrunners of a championship again.

The 2017 team had a 64.2% winning percentage. The 2022 team currently has a 60% winning percentage.

Was 2018 "statistically" a better year (same wins with one less loss)?

Trying to argue that last year shouldn't count as being bowl eligible is ridiculous. A bowl folded midseason.

If anything, having a donor with that much sway and money should be considered a positive, no?

"The win was UNT’s sixth, making the Mean Green bowl eligible for the sixth time in seven seasons under Littrell.

The milestone is a significant one considering UNT has only played in 13 bowl games in its history."

..............................................................

Another slight from Vito.  Bowl games are aplenty now and almost half of FBS teams get one. NT played in a Seth Bowl in 2016 with only 5 wins and 2020 with only 4 wins!

NT had 30 seasons in it's history with 6 or more wins but didn't get a Bowl invite because of fewer Bowls back before Vito's time.  Some seasons included 8, 9, and 10 wins, yet no Bowl.  So, to imply Seth is the gold standard of Bowl qualifying is not telling the full story, nor history.

Vito is incredibly dug in on his "bowl" defense of Littrell. People have pointed out to him exactly what you just said and that 2 of Littrell's bowls were given despite losing records. But Vito just plugs his ears and keeps singing the same tune.

Yes. 69.2% winning percentage.

Was originally comparing to 2017 because that’s the season Fine set the records that were serving as the benchmarks to Aune’s current numbers, as it related to Vito’s comparison of their single-season statistics.

So if we can win out in conference play, and win a Bowl we would be at 10 wins. A great goal to aim for!!

If "bowl eligible" = 6 wins, Vito is being extremely dishonest here. Seth Littrell has been bowl "eligible" only 3 times with this year being his 4th in 7 years.

What he said there is simply not true.

Bowl eligible is not just six wins. The NCAA definition includes a number of exceptions to the six win minimum.  And in 2020 the NCAA effectively said if you were willing and "COVID able" you could go.

Frankly I wish they would just drop 2020 from all the records. The NCAA had already said it doesn't count as far as players are concerned.  It probably shouldn't count for anything at all.
