I think of poor ole Rick Spears every time his distinct logo is referred to as the flying worm.  He deserves better.

on the flip side, he's unique in the college football landscape, how often does a single individual get credit for designing a logo as compared to a marketing company/conglomerate

I never called it “the flying worm” when I was around him.  Used to visit Rick & Bunny Spears in their home on Bairds Farm Road in Arlington.  They were fun to be around.

Rick Spears and Hayden Fry called it a stylized Eagle.  I too find the term flying worm a put down.  And now, we get national press and that negative term is being used.

The national press calls it that because UNT calls it that. Wonder if anybody within the department knows the original name?

Per school's website, the students began calling it the flying worm when it was designed. Guess it's you older guys' fault!

His work is immortalized and being brought back basically every year now. I would kill for something I have made to have that kind of lasting impact for NT

To me stylized eagle is a very bland name. “The Flying Worm” is catchy and in no way do I see that as an insult. I find it endearing. Maybe I’m too young to understand.

The Flying Worm is one of my favorite parts of UNT lore. I'm so glad we're seeing it again in games. Rick Spears a.k.a. Green Grenade created a logo that will be a memorable part of our football story forever.

Always loved the Flying Worm name and never thought of it as negative, but I totally get that it isn't something that strikes sportsball fear in your buddy in the break room.

I knew Rick and visited with him and Margie often in his later life.  I don't recall him having any issue with his logo being called the Flying Worm.  Heck I called it that around him and he didn't care.  I said I loved it and it was uniquely North Texas' own logo.  He was just happy people enjoyed it.

He liked sharing his stories about his time with Coach Fry and at North Texas in general.  He built a detailed model of an expanded Fouts and then several drawings of what he envisioned our new stadium would be like.  He lived to see Apogee in person and was very proud of it. 

He would be very proud we are still using his logo!   Long live the Stylized Eagle, aka Flying Worm!

Fit check.... This look is unique and clean. It stands apart from all other uniforms in FBS football. Should we get to the title game against UTSA, I hope we wear them again. UNT would be wise to continue embracing these throwbacks. The extra ESPN press is just proof of their appeal.

Awesome that UNT was the featured picture for the story, but of course they used the photo that doesn't allow to see said "Flying Worm."
