I didn't feel they were a rival in the beginning, but it has morphed into a rival because we've been conference mates for a while and there have been quite a few memorable games. It's at least happened organically which was not the case years ago.

We're allowed to have more than one rival. SMU is certainly a rival now if we weren't already for being in the same conference.

Hell, we can have 12 rivals…but only one of them cares enough to call us their rival.

Start beating SMU consistently and see how fast and how much they start hating us. Until then, they have no reason but to view us as the red headed stepchild.

That starts with demanding success from Head Coaches.  Stop worrying about trying to keep a good coach past 5 years.  UTSA has built a program that can rebound after a great coach is hired away.  The rivarly starts when we beat a SMU team in Ford Stadium that finishes the season bowl eligible.

We could do a lot worse than UTSA as our biggest rival.

Many years ago the NCAA Football game had a feature declaring your school's rival.

Ours was chosen as New Mexico State.

I don’t see how NMSU was branded as our rival back then. We’ve won 9 of the last 10 we played against them and 18 of the last 20. MTSU was way more competitive and the UTSA is closer still.

How could you possibly know this? They haven’t had a single head coach hired away yet.

Some fun facts. We have played SMU, Texas State, and New Mexico State more times than any other teams.

Of the top 5, ULM is easily the most competitive series, all four others are pretty uncompetitive historically.

There were some nail biters, for sure.  Close games that came down to final possessions.  IIRC, a win by more than 10 points was the exception.

Vito still pimping for UTSA...some things never change.  If we were not in a conference with them or somehow moved to another conference, I doubt we'd be looking to schedule them for an annual matchup.

Agree.  Vito promoting an opponent as a rival for his bait-clicks does not make them a rival.

Next week he will have WKU as our rival.
