I don't know if I would say powerhouse. Maybe in basketball, but for football I wouldn't use that as a description. We think that things at UNT are unique, but UCLA (and many others suffer from the same problem.) Student and fan apathy for sports has always been an issue, it's just a west coast thing. The LA sports culture is show up late and leave early to try and beat traffic. Students at UCLA are smart, they talk more about midterms, the crushing quarter system, and GPAs more than sports. You think it's hard for UNT to compete with all of the DFW attractions? LA has 2 NFL teams, 2 NBA teams, 2 MLB if you count the Angels, an actual  football powerhouse in USC, hockey, etc. Plus on a Friday night you can either spend an hour and a half getting to a game in Pasadena or you can go down to Santa Monica beach in 20 mins with your friends.

How do I know? I live here. My wife graduated from UCLA, worked at UCLA, I've been to UCLA football and basketball games. In my decade plus of living here I've met 1 hardcore UCLA fan.

I did say "historic."  When I was growing up, they were typically one of the top teams in the country.  I am aware that things have changed and that their attendance is measly; thus, my previous post.

Nice try but no cigar.  That picture is misleading because that section is where the band sits and they were performing the halftime show at that time.  Not saying it was a great crowd but don’t use the picture when the band was not in the seats.

Isn't that the band sitting in their section on the left edge of the picture?

Again, I think it’s difficult to compare the potential attendance at a UCLA home game to a home game at Apogee.  Los Angeles is the 2nd or 3rd largest population in the country compared to the, well, not as large a population.

This thread has evolved from the Murphy brothers to the UCLA attendance problems.

Huh? That is the student section - the game is in progress. The band is all in their seats (as you can see to the left of the picture.

Averaging over 41k for conference games is U-G-L-Y?  I dream to be that ugly one day.

Have you seen pictures of the crowds? Butts in seats is way closer to 15K-20K.

Yes, that's U-G-L-Y for a once proud P5 program.

Have you seen our attendance this year?

I have.  My comment was related to a story I read recently where they estimated around 1,000 were in attendance for a UCLA game.

Definitely -- much like the pictures floating around here of our last two games.

Here's one I took at the start of the 3rd quarter with our ~19k(?).

image.jpeg

FAU may have more on their sideline that we have in those stands.

But again, weird flex to say UCLA has less than our local highschool games or 41k for conference games is pathetic and those twins somehow made the wrong choice to play there (I think that is the implication?)

Historically we are a late-arriving and early-leaving fanbase.  This photo is prima facia evidence why we can't have nice things.

No, that's not the band faninNO is talking about.
He's talking about the ZZTop cover band that Jeff & his 2 roommates put together a week ago: Tres Hambres (they're big guys).
They'll be playing at Cool Beans tonight at 7:00.   It's not fair to not include those 3 in the picture you were showing.

Nice try x 2.   Look to the left of the image and you see the band sitting where the band sits.

Back to the topic of the thread.

To heck with both of them.

I hope they enjoy the cash, but you could see last year they were talented, selfish, and nearly uncoachable.  Players like this make coaching miserable.  You want the talent on the field, but you know at some point they are going to do something that will cost you the game.

To heck with both of them.

I know we aren't in a place to brag about attendance, but the UCLA numbers are just ugly.

Maybe the Rose Bowl is just too big for them to fill anymore?

Impressed that the biggest game on this list was our win in El Paso.

I doubt anyone in California has heard of Bowling Green , Alabama State, or South Alabama, although USA gave them a good game. They don't turn out to see opponents like this anymore that we  do for Texas Southern . Certainly UCLA would be better off playing in a smaller stadium, as would Rice. However they are not going to build a new stadium. Remember San Diego refused to build a new stadium for the Chargers, and L.A. refused to build a new stadium for the Rams.

But what you say is true, even so how about an undefeated #15 team in the country? It's a pretty bad look any way you slice it. 😬

Won’t matter. With their attitudes they won’t find li my term success. It’s the type of player you want in the moment for sure but their future isn’t going to be bright unless they make some serious changes to attitude and work ethic. Hopefully they do.

Nothing says bad work ethic like going from non-top-100 Texas HSFB UNT signees to the top edge defenders in the Pac-12 in three years. They should get off their asses and go back to posting weird paternal advice on fan message boards.

I can be happy for former Mean Green athletes who succeed elsewhere as long as they don't trash UNT or transfer to SMU or UTSA.

This! You can transfer with class and not take shots (directly or indirectly) at the school you left.

I don't think that collage football is that big a deal in California except for maybe USC. Back in the day I flew out for a Arkansas game [USC put up about 77 points on the Hogs]and was surprised at the large number of Mexican American tailgaters. This was a decades back [Bush, White, Leinard] and L.A. didn't have any pro teams so I assume the locals adopted the Trojans. I read that the high schools have a hard time getting kids to play.

That's because the USC campus is in south central which is a predominantly hispanic neighborhood, so they kind of adopt USC as the local team.

It's one of those weird curiosities, USC the expensive private school is in a terrible neighborhood, while UCLA; the public and cheaper school is next to Bel-Air.

Tuned into the UCLA game and second play Gabriel Murphys goes down injured and then pops right back up. Sounds familiar. Two plays later Grayson jumps off sides. The more things change the more they stay the same.

* no doubt we would be a better team with them still here but their discipline is still very raw
