Breon Hayward’s status for UTEP still unknown four days ahead of North Texas game

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Four days before UTEP is set to face North Texas to open up a monumental fifth season under Dana Dimel, the Miners still don’t know if their leading tackler will be in the lineup.

Breon Hayward, who accumulated 108 tackles in 2021 to lead the Miners, has not practiced all fall camp as he and UTEP await a waiver from the NCAA that would grant him a sixth year of eligibility.

As of Tuesday, sources told KTSM that Hayward had still not been able to participate at practice, because an NCAA ruling had not yet come down. While UTEP is still hopeful he’ll play, it seems increasingly likely that Hayward won’t be able to take the field vs. the Mean Green.

I think you meant "wouldn't" rather than "should," but it sounds like a good question.  I have no idea.

Jacob Brammer was a 2017 HS grad also and he is playing at Vandy this year no problem.

He transferred from Marshall after the 2018 season. Might have lost a year of eligibility?

I’m not sure but in my mind, covid gives you 6 years to play 5 which this guy is still within.

Brammer’s situation is a little more straightforward. Used all 5 years of eligibility at UNT and is using his COVID year at Vandy. 

Hayward split his 5 years at 3 different schools. I agree with other posters that it seems like he should be eligible, but I’m guessing the multiple transfers is the reason for the waiver requesting a 6th year. From what I’ve read, it sounds like it will be eventually granted. Did someone at UTEP screw up and not submit a waiver until recently?

      And camps. Just from Twitter, people claim it’s highly attended, organized, and well run. At the very least, it gets kids on campus and further develops a relationship with the kid/families/coaches. He’s been a positive for UNT.

      Unfortunately, I feel like pep bands all over the country are largely getting sidelined for the DJ music and "Let's make some noise!" kinda stuff. It's definitely not unique to NT.

      Football season ticket holder here that normally starts going to b-ball games once the calendar flips to the new year & my schedule opens up. But since UNT is a #basketballschool now, starting earlier this year. First off, anyone agree with this assessment? When I go to football games I'm just waiting for the proverbial kick to the nuts in the second half. East Carolina was a perfect microcosm of this. Oh look! We're up 21-0!! What are we going to do to blow it? And sure enough, we do. Over and over again. With basketball, I feel the exact opposite. Whether it's Minnesota, Oregon State, etc, what are we going to do to win it? And more times than not, we do!! Clutch, clutch, clutch. Well done team! I love it. Really liked the game presentation too. The only thing I've noticed is it seems the pep band is getting less "air time" if that makes sense at the expense of giving the hype guy more exposure. Kinda an ass-whip if you ask me. "SOMEBODY MAKE SOME NOOIISE!!!!!", "EVERONE SCREAM HELL YEAH!!!!". We can be loud on our own without being told, thank you very much. It s almost like a warm-up act before he heads down to Dallas for his 2nd job at Baby Dolls. With that solid radio DJ voice he can then bark out "EVERYONE SCREAM HELL YEAH!! AND GIVE IT UP FOR DESTINY ON THE MAIN STAGE!!!!". Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about there. 🤣🤣 Happy Thanksgiving all and Go Mean Green!

      The dislike for Coach O is incredible and this just shows what type of fans we truly have. His job is to get interaction with high school players and coaches and he's done a better job of that than anyone in the history of this school. His job is to get them looking at us and willing to talk to the school and that is happening.
