UTEP vs. North Texas PREDICTION

North Texas and UTEP didn't meet until mid-November in 2021, so kickstarting their season against each other should be fun to watch. The Mean Green appears to be the better team based on their quarterback and wide receiving corps, however, they can no longer rely on former running back DeAndre Tony to produce over 1,200 rushing yards and double-digit (13) rushing touchdowns. During their previous matchup, North Texas' quarterback, Austine Aune, went 15/33-240-1 but benefitted from Tony's presence in the backfield, as the Mean Green ball carriers finished with 183 rushing yards and a touchdown. Aune will likely remain the starter in Week 1 but University of Memphis transfer, Grant Gunnell, could usurp the QB1 role once he becomes eligible to play.

UTEP's quarterback, Gavin Hardison, played nearly identical to Aune's performance in their 20-17 loss last season. The junior completed 15/29-273-1 but also tossed an interception, ultimately costing the Miners a big road win in Denton, Texas. An underrated offensive line, combined with strong run defense and notable pass-rushing standout, Praise Amaewhile, could contain a one-dimensional North Texas offense lacking an explosive RB1, as the current listed RB1, Oscar Adaway III, missed all of last season with a torn ACL. Hardison will face a Mean Green defense that lost its top two defensive ends and a lackluster secondary. He's more than capable of picking apart the coverage behind a good offensive line and has nice targets in the passing game that include wideout Tyrin Smith and tight end Trent Thompson. UTEP can feed off the energy of their home crowd and overpower North Texas' downgraded defense in an opening weekend upset. Take the Miners' Moneyline at -105.

I did my UAB Blazer contest picks for the week-I picked UTEP to win the game,  but I gave it low confidence ratings.  I hope I miss this pick.   SL team will need to come out and knock UTEP to the Mat early to get the crowd out of the game.  I don't want to hear SL say after the game when you get knocked down you have to get back up.  I was shocked to see we have a losing record against the Miners.  UNT and NMSU must be the only teams they have winning record against.

Odds Shark Predicts a win by UTEP

I hope we win this game at UTEP, if we lose, it will set the tone for the season. I don't see us beating SMU but that is the upset I would really like. A this point I have lost all faith in Seth and I think we will lose both games.

I personally don't believe in putting that much weight in Game 1.  the biggest learning curve is game 1 to game 2, and you just never know what will click.  Sometimes it is pretty dramatic.  Good and bad.

I agree I just think the second game is going to be bad. Two defeats in a row to teams that should be winnable will impact tailgating and the fans. Tailgating is all that has let me keep my sanity or what is left of it.

I hope we're prepared to  play in El Paso. I can think of times we've gone out there and looked really bad.
