North Texas: North Texas athletic director Wren Baker showed rare patience last season after North Texas started 1-6. Seth Littrell won five straight games to close the year, clinch a bowl bid and likely preserve his job. Progress is expected again this season, as Littrell is just 14-21 over the past three years. He has one year remaining on his deal after the season ends, and he'd be owed nearly $1.3 million if he's fired. Littrell is well liked on campus, which is why UNT leaders have shown patience after he couldn't maintain a hot start that included back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2017 and 2018. He has made bowl games in five of six seasons, but three of those bowl teams finished with losing records. The AAC league upgrade looming means there's some urgency for improvement.

Having multiple years of $1.3 million on your contract doesn't mean that Seth Littrell is well-liked on campus.

It means we couldn't afford to dump him and hire someone else.

That's the hardest part of being a UNT fan--watching us keep failing coaches until they are deemed "affordable" to fire. Its running only on KNOWN COSTS and never analyzing OPPORTUNITY COSTS.

Telling the truth?

No, stop with the narrative that Littrell was kept around for financial reasons.

SL wasn't retained because we couldn't afford to buy out his contract.

100%

He is well liked in the AD and of course his family has connections with some of our largest donors.  We all want the best for SL and had a few solid years under him but the QB debacle has made all the difference since Mason left.

From Richard Johnson at Sports Illustrated:

”North Texas

After back-to-back nine-win seasons, North Texas is 14–21 in the past three seasons. Seth Littrell, whose contract runs through the end of 2023, has undoubtedly raised the profile of the program. UNT is a G5 program willing to pay—Littrell’s salary is between $1.3 million and $1.8 million. Its location near the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex also makes it attractive for up-and-coming coaches. Some sources say Litrell missed his window by not selling high and making a jump to the Power 5 after his initial success.”

Very true but that's on him. After he's fired (or contract not renewed), he's probably going to be relegated to taking an OC position for a few years trying to build back his reputation before another school even thinks of giving him a shot.

Also, hopefully a lesson-learned for NT about jumping too quick into a lengthy contract extension.  The downfall happened right after.
