SAN ANTONIO — UT-San Antonio football coach Jeff Traylor shared an extraordinary statistic during his press conference Monday at the Texas High School Coaches Association’s Convention and Coaching School.

“We signed 29 kids. They were all Texas high school football players,” Traylor said. “I believe that we’re the only school that is 100%.”

At a time when college coaches are using the transfer portal to fill more and more holes in their rosters, Traylor and new Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire have a unique advantage when it comes to recruiting. They were high school football coaches in talent-rich Texas before they got their current college jobs, with McGuire winning three state championships at Cedar Hill and Traylor winning the same number of state titles at Gilmer.

“It’s huge, just from the standpoint of guys my age, they know me,” McGuire said. “We opened our doors at Cedar Hill. I was there 20 years, 14 as the head coach. People would come watch our offseason, people would come watch spring football. We treated everybody the exact same. I think because we did that, whenever we came [to Texas Tech], people know this is how they are going to treat our players, this is how Coach McGuire is going to be every day.”

With the transfer portal and the NIL, HS recruiting is going to have a major drop off. Why develop when you can get them out of the portal. It is not who you signed out of HS, but who kept you out of that class  over the next 4 years. For starters at UNT, I would not waste time on HS, Qb's.

But the G5s aren't getting 4 years out of these players if they can play and produce. They're getting 2-3 years and these kids are then transferring up to the P5.

That is my point with HS kids. You get a stud he transfers you get a dud and you are stuck. I can see 80% of our recruiting classes being transfers. I would try to get at least a kid with 2yrs eligibility. I hope there are a lot of P5 kids that want to start, but the NIL $$$ could have an impact.

Your point is valid, but you can't recruit scared.  This very thread is bragging on Traylor's recruiting success, and where is his success coming from?  Texas high school recruits.

Don't forget, we've had our share of flops via transfers.

A fix for that =  just have an additional form = the kid signs over his media Grant of Rights to NT for 7 years!
