DENTON, Texas – Tez Dumars has been named assistant coach of North Texas women’s basketball, head coach Jalie Mitchell announced Tuesday. Dumars has served as the Founder and Executive Director of the West Texas Premier Basketball Club in Amarillo for the past two years.

“I am elated to announce the hiring of Tez Dumars”, Mitchell said. “He is a knowledgeable, hungry and growing young coach full of energy and excitement about the game, as well as the University of North Texas. His experience at different levels and relatability will help us a great deal in recruiting and player development. Tez is a star and proven winner, a welcome addition to our program!”

Prior to his time in Amarillo, he spent several seasons coaching and directing one of the DC Queens Club branches. In 2018-19, Dumars rejoined his alma mater West Texas A&M as an assistant coach. The Buffs went 34-4 and finished the season in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.

After finishing his collegiate career in 2015, Dumars played professionally overseas with Anagennises Germasogeia and ForexTime Apollon of the Cyprus Division A League. During his first year as a pro he averaged 18.5 points per game and shooting 38.7% from the field and 32.8% from three-point range. He spent the 2016-17 season in Limassol, Cyprus with ForexTime Apollon.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Dumars manned the point for West Texas A&M for four seasons in Canyon. When he graduated, he was the fourth-highest scorer in school history with 1,230 points. As a Bluff he earned a bachelor’s (2015) in science of general studies. While playing at Garland Lakeview Centennial HS, he led the team to the Texas 5A State Finals as a junior and senior. Dumars was a four-year starter for the Patriots and also excelled in the classroom as a Texas Scholar.

“I’m super thrilled to get the opportunity to coach at the University of North Texas. Ever since I was little, I wanted to be around the game whether it was playing or coaching. It’s a dream come true to coach at UNT considering it’s in my backyard. I’m excited to get to work!”
