This should have been done a long time ago.

IMO, as great as Mean Joe Greene was/is, the barrier Haynes & King broke through at North Texas is infinitely more important.    And Haynes as a monster in his own right.

Kudos to Baker & all involved in finally getting something like this done.

Go Mean Green!

They might want to fix the description of the plaza in the donation link that states:

The Mean Green are proud to announce the Unity Plaza Project. Unity Plaza will serve as a recognition to Leon King and Abner Hayes, who were in 1965, the first to break the color barrier in Major College Football in Texas. Both men went on to have great careers, Dr. King as a long time educator in Dallas and Mr. Haynes as a professional football player and business man. Over the years King and Haynes have been great ambassadors for UNT.

It was 1958.

Will anybody see it there? I take great pride in this idea and wished it was possibly on the main area of campus for all to see. But am glad we will have it

When’re else would be better.  Seems like that is the best place we have on the Eagle point side where people see it.

I would have preferred a sculpture type deal like A&M has for the 12th man or like the Mean Joe  sculpture in bronze but I’m guessing it was not in the budget.

Fans need to understand, we are moving from driving a Mercedes’ in the CUSA to driving a Taurus in the AAC.  NIL adds another funding concern as well.  Until we find our next “Mattress Mac” type of sugar daddy donor  we will need to start cutting coupons and eating bologna sandwiches with white bread and mustard.

Abner Haynes last game in a NT uniform was the 1959 Sun Bowl game on 12-31-59. He was the first round draft choice of the Dallas Texans in 1960.

That means that 59 was his senior year, 58, was his junior year, 57 was his sophomore year, and 56 was his freshman year.

Abner Haynes mentioned as promising newcomer in this preseason article in 1957.
