TCU-SMU-NIL

Looking at the 247 Transfer rankings, TCU is currently #9, SMU #13 and UNT #78 in the Nation. Very impressive for the 2 small private schools. Looks like SMU had a haul of 4 Star players from UT and Miss State over the weekend. TCU and SMU's NIL programs, have to be emulated by the Mean Green. What SMU has done as a non P5, is shocking, especially for a first time head coach and new staff. Sonny Dykes already has the formula at frogland. UNT better get their NIL program rolling.

There is no doubt Littrell was especially slow to move to the transfer portal. We are paying the price.

NIL is still new. SMU is ranked high because of Sonny and his hard work on transfers.

You're probably kidding, because most of the boosters involved with SMU in the early 80's, are probably deceased or in the rest home.

It should be evident to all that UNT will not be able to compete in the NIL market. (Lack of money)

Add to that an incompetent head coach and any forward progress made over the years with improved athletic facilities will quickly erode away.

Just saying. Prove me wrong.

Blount was one of the youngest, do a search on the dozen that were banned, they were old back then.

The new staff is actually significantly outperforming the Dykes staff. Dykes did not have the benefit of NIL like we do now.

What you're seeing now is probably structural. Dykes has experience working the portal and the "come home to Dallas ..err...uhh...DFW" pitch, plus now Big12 clout. The new staff has NIL and a better overall recruiting staff.

SMU has cash…in other news, we need oxygen to breathe.

Look, if $$$ is the only thing that matters, SMU should be fine. They ought to sue the NCAA for billions of dollars for killing their program for reasons that are now deemed legal.

As for us, we have no cash. We couldn’t buy out a coach who has not shown anything without Graham Harrell, so we saved an extra $1.3 million. It is what it is. The NIL pool and the portal are not friends to a program with no money, not enough fans, and a losing legacy.

Y'all pump out a billion grads a year. Most don't make much money, yes, but you must have a couple very successful alumni. That alone could fund some NIL.

Stone Cold & Phil McGraw could each easily find your whole program if all the articles on NIL spending levels are correct.

I saw a link on TCU's board for their NIL program, you can donate as little as 25 dollars a month. UNT's enrollment and alumni base, dwarfs TCU and SMU's combined. UNT could easily compete with them, if they stopped complaining and got busy.

The lack of money is from the boosters and business community. Plus we are in a conference with little if any national exposure currently. If we win in the AAC then we might get some DFW businesses to approach our players for ads and such.
But please stop equating NT’s financial resources with the lack of NIL. Our alumni, including many cheap ones right here, don’t even fund the athletes’ scholarships. Unrealistic to think they will pay for NIL funds. Need to win consistently and get more TV time so that businesses will invest in our players.

Guess I should have been more specific concerning where the NIL funds come from.

Also, if you think winning in the AAC will garner more TV time which will equate to more NIL donations from area businesses you haven’t been paying attention.

Q. @mousetown wants to know: What do you think of Jay Bilas’ assessment of the pushback by college coaches against unregulated NIL deals? It like he thinks there should be no rules at all.

A. Bilas is a typical ESPN social activist, mixing politics withy sports. He and a lot of others in the national media, along with some fans think this is all about collegiate athletes making as much money as possible and any attempt to regulate NIL deals is an infringement on the rights of college athletes.

He needs read the Supreme court ruling on NIL. It didn’t say anything about boosters forming NIL collectives and throwing wads of cash at athletes to get them to attend a certain school.
The supreme court said that college athletes have a right to make their own NIL deals.

The ruling was to make sure that once an athlete is enrolled on scholarship at a specific university the NCAA or the school he/she attends cannot control his/her NIL.

The NCAA has two basic rules on NIL. The one that is relevant to this discussion states that specific NIL deals can only be offered to athletes after they sign a letter of intent.
Most athletics departments have been observing this rule. A few formed NIL collectives made up of boosters and started offering deals to high school athletes or athletes on scholarship other universities. The NCAA announced that it’s going to start going after school that violate that rule. It’s also very likely that NIL collectives are going to be banned by NCAA rule.

Bilas and others think the NCAA will get challenged in court on this and lose. I don’t agree. There might be some lawsuits filed but I think they will fail.

The true NIL model should be the one in place at Arkansas and other schools. Athletes are taught how to control their NIL by hiring an NIL agent. That athlete becomes an independent businessman. The agent lines up endorsements for the athlete. The school is not involved.
