I was having this discussion with another fan.  Which of the two teams was the best.  Yes Javion won the NCAA game but the team with Tylor accomplished a lot in the regular season.  Not an easy choice.

i am amazed that so many think that the 20-21 squad at 18-10 (9-5) was better than 21-22.

No way that is true.  If you want to argue that the 20-21 team was better in the tournaments, ok; but overall there was no comparison.

It’s always (HS, College & Pro) the team playing the best ball at the end of the year; where season records don’t matter. The 2021 team was playing the best ball at the right time with better players and depth.

The 2011 Dallas Mavericks didn’t have an impressive regular season record but  got hot near the end of the season to win the championship.

A plethora of examples each year in HS basketball and football.

The Mavericks went 57-25 in 2011 and had the 4th best record in the NBA. Pretty impressive, IMO.

We were missing a piece like Javion down the stretch, mainly in the UTEP and La Tech losses. It was hard to figure out and lock down Javion, but Perry had a tough time scoring and creating offense.

However, Perry is more clutch but not by much. Javion hit some really clutch shots, mainly against La Tech and Western.

Both seasons were great and set new standards at UNT, but I gotta go with 2020-21. If COVID didn’t effect things, that team wins 20+ regular season games and if you don’t run into an unconscious Villanova team, you’re winning at least 2 tournament games.

Proud of both teams and the seasons they had!!

What about the 2019-2020 squad?  They were regular season champs, but then COVID. We’ve witnessed some great basketball these last few years. Keep it going, GMac!

That team was LOADED with talent. Reese, Gibson, Smart, Hamlet, Geu, Bell, Simmons.. damn.

Last year's team will always be remembered more fondly and given they won a game in the NCAAs will always be better historically.

This year's team was probably better though.  But in ten years we'll all remember last year's team as the better one.  Like Cooley mentioned that's just what happens.  I saw an old member of the Steel Curtain once...I think Jack Lambert...talk about that he believed the best team they had in their run was one that didn't win the Super Bowl.  Everyone else remembers the 4 in six years though.

So a team that won 3 straight in the conference tournament and went 4-26 is better than a team that went 26-4 and lost the first game in the league tournament.

Sure overall records count as do a great variety of other variables, schedule, injuries, location of games, etc.

An assumption that because last year's team won a game in the NCAA's it is better than the 2021-22 squad despite having a lesser record is very debatable.

The view that the results of one game overshadows the total season performance is more than suspect IMO.

Both were great teams, 20-21 with the tall Simmons and Hamlet had an edge on talent.  However, last season's team played better defense and won more games.

Heres hoping that the next year's version will be even better and there is a good chance that could happen.
