All right, here’s two scenarios.

Scenario one - We win the CUSA tournament and go to the NCAA tournament. While there we win two games and get to the Sweet 16.

Scenario two - Let’s say that we don’t win the CUSA tournament and end up in the NIT.  We make it all the way to Madison Square Garden and lose in the NIT final by 2 or 3 points.

Which would you prefer?

Scenario 1 and it’s not even close. I’d still take the NCAA scenario even if we lost in the first round. I want the tournament title.

Winning the NIT wouldn't do much locally, much less nationally. A sweet 16 appearance would put UNT on the map much like it did VCU for several years and more recently Loyola Chicago. It might be the deepest run a dfw based college team has made in years.

Making NCAA Tournament and losing in First game > Winning Two Rounds in NIT

Making NIT F4 (and/or Title game) > Losing First Round of NCAAs

Winning First Round but losing Round of 32 in NCAAs > Making NIT Final Four and losing OR winning there and losing in the NIT Final

Winning NIT > than Losing in Round of 32 (The fact that you get some nice hardware puts it over the top)

Sweet 16 is better than anything possible from NIT

Everybody remember that big NIT championship the Longhorns won? I’m sure the Longhorn faithful are still kissing the ground Shaka walks on for that one……oh wait.

S16 is lightyears better than anything the NIT can offer.  Even an NIT 'ship.

If we manage to make it to the S16, I don't think Denton would know what to do about itself.  It would be joyous bedlam and the national exposure would be incredible.

Yeah, I think the entire week’s worth of talk about UNTs #1 defense being a problem for whatever school we’re up against as a Sweet 16 would be better than going to the NIT.

I’d take scenario 2 over a 2nd round exit though.

Having followed closely the New Mexico Lobos and their storied program their dream is Sweet 16. They haven’t been able to crack that nut. If our Mean Green can do it that would be spectacular!

It’s a tall order. Let’s beat UTSA, finish strong and win the tourney!

I would agree it is that dumb. A sweet 16 is greater than any nit run could be. I love a good would you rather but that was one wasn’t balanced well. You’re welcome to come by and have a beer any time. Gmg

Sweet 16.

In terms of value indication of team quality they may be even between the scenarios. But sadly enough the attention and change to the reputation for the NCAA tournament is soooooo much bigger, that it is obvious. Sweet 16 means loooots of features and preview articles (writers only have 8 games to preview) between monday and thursday of week 2. All of those will review how NT won its first two games.

LaTech made it to the NIT semifinal last year. Of the few who actually noticed/remember that, it changed nobodies mind about the program and they will be stuck in C-USA anyway, as it descends into nothingness. More people remember NTs first round upset last year.
