1950, North Texas vs Paul Bear Bryant

I did not realize before seeing this program that NT had played against Coach Bryant.

He was head coach at Kentucky from 1946-53.  Kentucky opened the 1950 season hosting NT.

Kentucky won the game 25-0, but only LSU, #9 Tennessee and #1 OU held them to fewer points that season! 

They finished 11-1 and beat #1 OU in the Sugar Bowl.   In 1990, Jeff Sagarin released a retroactive ranking of teams for the 1950 season and Kentucky was listed #1.

NT finished 7-2-1. 

We can be BOTH a Football and Basketball school.  We do have some quality football history!

For those that haven't put two-and-two together (like myself just now), Odus Mitchell coached the Mean Green for 20 years! He took the position after the WWII break, then Rod Rust took over in 1967

This upcoming season will be the 75th anniversary of our Salad Bowl game against Nevada.

Maybe, just maybe, the Athletic Department will make a little bigger deal of this than they did the 1946 Optimist Bowl 75th.
