I’m taking my 8th grader to the game on Saturday.  He just started taking basketball seriously and is playing competitively. Winter/Spring Rec Leagues.

Question:  What specifically can I point out to him that the team does well…or even certain players?  And how would I put it into 8th grade basketball terms?  Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Have him watch how NT gets after them defensively on the perimeter.  JJ Murray in particular.  You don’t even have to say a lot… just watch & compare to USMs energy when defending us.

Offensively, watch the ball movement before we eventually take a shot.  There isn’t any urgency to score, so plenty of opportunities to watch that machine churn… eventually, they’ll lock in on a matchup they like because the opposing defense couldn’t get to the right spot in time.   And if they actually do defend well, watch Perry do something magical, or McBride hit a loooong 3!

Hustle!!!The speed to get to the perimeter to contest a shot. The speed to collapse on a player when their player gets the ball down low.  Good luck, for an 8th grader he wants to run and gun!!!

Just watch NT lol. Pretty much every thing they do is great. Except maybe FT shooting 🤣

Abou was great from the line tonight.  A nice change.

Have him watch Aaron Scott (Freshman) when he comes in off the bench and how he moves around the court when he doesn't have the ball.  He is always hustling to his next coached spot and is always anticipating the next move.  Also how he crashes the basket for a rebound along with Thomas Bell III.

I think Scott is going to be really special in the next few years.
