Thoughts on Olympic athletes being "warned" by the Chinese government that "inappropriate" comments could lead to punishment? Basically telling all not to express their opinions on how things are in China if yhey disagree.

Why is China even allowed to host?

Apparently some athletes are going to boycott the opening ceremony.  https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/02/02/olympic-athletes-preparing-boycott-opening-ceremony-winter-olympics-beijing/

The Chinese government says that "Any behaviour or speeches that are against the Olympic spirit, and especially against Chinese laws and regulations are also subjected to certain punishment.

So, will a boycott be considered behavior "against the Olympic spirit, and especially against Chinese laws and regulation...subjected to certain punishment?"  You'd think the IOC would push back against Xi in favor of the athletes, but no.  They're a disgrace.

There weren’t many countries that wanted to host. It was between China and Kazakhstan as the finalists. All other countries that expressed interest withdrew their proposals by 2014.

Kazakhstan would have been awesome.

I think as long as the athletes don't mention any issues regarding organ harvesting, prison camps, or forced sterilization, they'll be fine.

I mean, it worked in 1936.

Yeah, I bet those trashy Kazakhstanis closely monitor their local versions of Facebook, Twitter, and Spotify for "mis-information and dis-information".

What a horrible world. I'm glad we don't emulate it.

They do https://www.state.gov/reports/2020-country-reports-on-human-rights-practices/kazakhstan/

Worked for a company that had an operation there and the stories and precautions were pretty similar to attending conferences or events in China. Just because an email forward didn't tell you to be scared of it doesn't mean it's not scary.

I am not disagreeing with you, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is a nasty little despot.

Fair enough, not exactly sure the point you were trying to make then I guess.
