SMU is getting QB’s like Shane Buechele and Tanner Mordecai out of the portal and we are getting the backup QB from a program that we should already be better than? Hopefully this guy is a walk-on.

Head was a freshman this year, possibly redshirted, but had a pretty extensive offer list out of Pearland HS including LA Tech, AR St., CO St., Cornell, Kansas, LA-La, NV, NM, Penn, So. MS, TX Southern, TSU-SM, Troy, Tulane, utsa and Yale.

He was rated a 3 star - .8389 at 6'1" and 180lbs from Pearland HS.  Good program.

Ja'Mori Maclin is the cousin of Jeremy Maclin and was a high 3 star coming out of high school in St. Louis with a composite rating of .8742.  He is listed at 5'11" 178lbs.  He had an offer list prior to signing with Missouri that included AZ St., Indiana, Iowa, Iowa St., Kansas, Kentucky, New Mexico and Western Michigan.  Could be a plug and play starter.

It shouldn’t surprise you. I mean, some people on this board think we should consider moving on from John Hedlund…the winningest coach in the department. Wild and crazy stuff.

I’m sure Seth got the inside scoop on his ability from Skip Holtz (who many wanted to replace Seth with). They are friends and I imagine Skip won’t be too upset if we beat the snot out of Sonny Cumbie next year. We wouldn’t be signing this kid if Seth didn’t trust Skip’s evaluation.

He has 26 straight winning seasons, Jonny. Has he won in the NCAA tournament? Well, no. But we can’t get carried away and discuss potentially having higher expectations can we? I say no!

I was hoping for an established QB from a smaller school (like Bailey Zappe was last year) or a former starter at a P5 who was in a bad situation (Casey Thompson?).

Head went to two high schools and we are his second college.

I hope he is the next Mason Fine. If we use the portal, it should be for a stud.

There’s a very good chance we have to rebuild our QB depth chart. Not just find a starter. I look at this as a guy who can contend for the starting job but also a guy who probably hops Amani Gilmore and pushes Bryce Drummond, the other guys who have similar eligibility. Keep in mind those guys committed under Wallis, not Joseph. 

Head was at Pearland when Joseph was coaching in the Houston area so pretty reasonable to think this is his guy.

He was the one that threw that dime TD pass in the corner of the end zone on us this year on one of his very first drives in a game. He was a great QB in High School. I am for one excited about the potential. I’ve seen him play and he is a leader and a gamer.

I just watched some of his highlight video. The potential is definitely there. I think this is a really good pick up.
