DRC Sunday column: Should UNT coach Seth Littrell stay or go? It's up to AD Wren Baker, who faces critical decision

What is the exact buyout?  His base salary is $1.35 million not $2 million.

SL base salary is $1.35M, but he has guaranteed incentives that boost each year to a minimum of just over $1.8M.

SL contract was extended to run through 2023, so two more years left after this one.

If anyone has $3.6M+ burning a hole in your pocket, I am sure WB wouldn't turn down a meeting.

Of course it is.

It might not have been a problem when we were paying Dickey $120,000 a year, but it sure as hell is when we are paying $2M+ a year to the HC alone.

Do we have big donors that could pay off SL's contract, and then sign an even bigger check for a new coach with a bigger assistant pool?  YES.

Do they want to do that?  If they don't, the AD doesn't have millions of dollars sitting around unused to do it.  Neither does the school.

Things have changed around here, you know?
There's only 1 big donor to worry about in this situation, and he/they aren't the holdup...  So it's been said.
Now, of course no one is going to want to cut that check without knowing what's coming up next.  The idea of cutting that check without a single iota of who's replacing him is something no donor would do.    They're not paying to "get rid of him".  Littrell is not McCarney. They're paying to upgrade. Finding the replacement that would be an upgrade is Wren's job.   6 weeks ago, that job was a piece of cake.   Now, maybe not as easy.

but Dickey only got into one Bowl game with a losing record, thanks to winning Conference and not due to academics or COVID

How many bowl-eligible teams did Dickey beat during that 4 year bowl run? 1 or 2? We beat two this year alone.

THat's not the direction that I intended this to go, but I'll bite.

IMO Dickey's run was more impressive.  Think of the emotional swing we have endured this season.  Now go through it year-after-year.  Dickey played a brutal OOC year after year and somehow managed to rally the guys in time for conference - albeit, softer - play.  It was an absolute rollercoaster.  Joyful, exhausting, maddening, ... every single year.
