What about Jeff Rodgers?

I understand he wouldn't move any needles in recruiting but to have an alumni coach would be awesome. Might be able to bring along Cam Turner as OC who has a ton of west coast/spread offensive experience.

So, we’re hiring a career special teams coach because his degree says North Texas?

Nothing wrong with coaching special teams. They interact with every player on the team. Would be a more CEO approach in regards to play calling. Didn't Mississippi State almost hire Joe Judge before the giants did? Its not unheard of. But to answer your question yeah basically 😁. It would be nice to think that our coach loves UNT like we all do.

Having worked only in the pro ranks, Jeff has little first-hand experience recruiting for colleges, only as a grad assistant. To say he's not knowledgeable would be a fallacy. Jeff's father Randy Rodgers has been for decades the foremost college recruiting expert in Texas through his position at Texas Football Magazine and Jeff has closely followed this process. http://www.randyrodgersrecruiting.com/_s_clients.asp

I'd love to see Jeff eventually come home and work with North Texas in some capacity but the lucrative NFL salaries are probably going to keep him occupied for a long while.

* For those not familiar, Jeff was a four year letterman linebacker for the Mean Green, and his senior year he intercepted Texas Tech quarterback Rob Peters for a 27 yard pick-six touchdown in North Texas' 1999 21-14 victory over the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech defensemen
give chase to North
Texas quarterback Jason
Attaway in the second
quarter.

North Texas QB Jason Attaway runs for yardage in the victory.

Many on this board already know this, but it bears repeating in this instance. Doing research about great talent is fine, but the bottom line is selling yourself and the school you represent to basically strangers. If you haven't practiced that on a regular basis, you are doing to be at a great disadvantage.

Interesting story about that play. Myself and the rest of the Talons were at that game. We needed something, anything, good to happen. @CMJ turned to the rest of us and (jokingly) said “Interception for a touchdown.” The very next play was the one pictured above. 😮

That was the highlight of my sports life. I believe the quote was slightly different "Interception returned for a touchdown." I'll never forget the look on Wes's face when it happened literally the next play.

But I don't think it was THIS game. Wasn't it the 2000 game that we lost 13-7?

I disagree. We need to focus on alumni period. We have way too many non UNT graduates in our board of regents. We need people that care about us.

What we need is someone with a very particular set of skills; skills they have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make them a nightmare for people that play us.
