Yeah that's definitely a possibility but I wouldn't put the chances of that happening above 10%

Don’t get the false impression that “locking someone up early” will prevent a bigger fish from snapping them up before they ever coach a game. It is wiser to plan behind the scenes and watch a clearer picture unfold of all the jobs available this year.

Actually, I've reconsidered, I'd put it at a 1% chance or less.

Considering that article is from 2011 and the last one that comes to mind is Chris Beard leaving UNLV to Texas Tech before coaching a game (and then the same Tech AD got his feelings hurt when Texas did took his coach AND UNLV did not give them permission when they asked to talk to him).

Also, there's nothing to suggest that you can't do both: work behind the scenes and lock someone up early.

If this is an argument against then politely, you're really grasping at straws if you're scared someone will leave early.

Not a realistic chance of it happening, an outlier at best and if that is a reason an AD doesn't sign someone (Georgia Southern AD wi/Helton is getting rave reviews) - then it's seriously pathetic and inept that they would be so hamstrung by fear that they couldn't execute their job.

It's like deciding not to go outside during the day ever again because you're afraid to get skin cancer - ok, that may very well work, but making that decision and acting on it is a clear and undeniable warning sign of mental illness along with not being able to accurately judge risk or process cognitive reasoning and rendered debilitated by fear.

TL:DR

In layman's terms: that's a copout combined with a bunch of bull!

I am not at all afraid of someone leaving early. I’m afraid we will make a poor decision by rushing the search to “lock someone up” early. More information is better, patience and finding the best available option is a much better choice than trying to beat everyone else to the punch. The best hire in December may be completely different from the best hire in November. Trust in Wren. Texas had Sark hired before they ever fired Herman. If Wren is firing Seth after this season, he has already made that decision and is actively looking for candidates now. McCasland was officially hired 8 days after Benford was fired (and only 3 days after his last ASU game) which means Wren had the deal done before season’s end.

Going to have so many more options at the end of the season. Yes, there will be more competition for those guys but we need someone who really wants to be here, so if a target goes elsewhere then fine.

Wren 18 months before realignment they hired a consultant and put a presentation pkg together. Imagine how impressed the decision makers were to get the rise video that night or next day after contacting UNT. Wren I believe has a short list and will pick best available off that list. GMG
