With less than two weeks before the start of the 2021 college football season for Maryland football, coach Mike Locksley made an addition to the team's coaching staff.

The Terrapins brought in former UTEP offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Mike Canales to serve as an analyst. He has also spent time as the offensive coordinator at North Texas, USF and Arizona.

Canales confirmed the hire by updating his Twitter biography. He has experience as a head coach during interim stints in 2010 and 2015 with North Texas where he was credited with starting the popular  "Lock the gate" chant.   In those two seasons, Canales posted a record of 3-9.

Locksley is not a catch when he was head coach at UNM he was not in control of the program.   The players ran wild on him and it showed on the field.   I sure Chico will be looking for another job soon.

Well, it's hard to understand some things, such as, why Locksley ever got hired as HC anywhere after NM, and why he's still HC at Maryland.

Considering the records of Locksley and Canales, I'm thinking Canales may be angling for another interim HC stint.

Don’t know if or how hard he tried but it’s weird to me he didn’t find an FCS HC job and prove himself there. His resume isn’t good enough to get an FBS head gig now.
