Bob Bullock's been gone from Texas politics since 1999 and passed away at 69 not long after he left office.

Unfortunate, because Texas Tech could use his clout now in the way the Red Raiders benefited from it nearly 30 years ago. The formation of the Big 12 was publicly announced in February 1994, so it must have been not long before that a high-level meeting took place in the office of the lieutenant governor, one that would help shape college athletics in these parts for the next three decades.

"A&M was going to try to go off to the SEC," John Montford told me a while back, "and (Texas Chancellor) Bill Cunningham was talking to the Pac-10 at the time, and Bullock told them, 'You blankety-blanks can go anywhere you want as long as you take Texas Tech and Baylor with you.' And implied if they didn't, they would not do well in the state-budget process."

I think Bullock & Ann Richards both helped Baylor get in the Big 12 (when it could have more easily been TCU or UH).

Perhaps a well timed corespondence to your Texas representative would pay dividends for good ol North Texas.
