Yes, we need conference brethren. But they need us (and Oklahoma) more than we need them. A package deal of Texas and Oklahoma, just the two, would make every conference in the country snap to attention and light up the phone lines. We are the IT factor. As Reggie Jackson famously said, "We are the straw that stirs the drink." We should not accept, or support, conference members, or prospective members, that have a smaller reach, fewer resources, than we do – simply because it makes sense on the map.

We can do this because we can deliver significant as in massive dollars and lots of TV viewers and plenty of fans who will travel anywhere, given program success and the right conference membership. Much more on this in my overview of the Big 12.

Just someone wanting to relive the glory days of Texas football. Texas would not want to join the SEC because A&M is there and also they would not do well. Years back rumor has it that Texas and OU were very close to heading to the Pac-12.

P.S. - The Longhorn Network would probably have to go or the deal restructured before another conference would take them.

This would never happen.  Texas is happy right now knowing that, if they can beat OU, they have a pretty nice path to the playoff.

They want no part of playing in a, as the article title suggests, “stronger conference.”  They don’t want to see Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, and aTM in consecutive weeks.

I heard a rumor on Austin radio that UT and OU were trying to go to the SEC as a package deal but I have very little faith in that rumor.

Arkansas hasn’t won a conference title since they left the SWC and the Aggies haven’t won one since they left the Big12. The glitz, glamour, and cash of the SEC is enticing but if you want to sniff a conference title, you don’t go to the SEC.

Prediction if this were to happen (surely to be wrong)
Texas to the Pac 12 (possibly paired with Baylor)
OU to Big 10+ (possibly paired with OSU)

You don’t think they’d take Tech over Baylor out west?

I'm not gonna read this article.

I'm just going to notice that UT hasn't won a B12 title in 10+ years, nor a national title in 15+ years.  Then, I shall assume this entire thing wreaks of "The current shit ain't benefiting us so here is why it needs to change."

That's my scientific post.

You could say the same thing about the Cowboys, yet they are one the most valuable sports franchises in the World. I am no fan of the Horns, but they could bring a tremendous following.

Baylor ain't going anywhere...The Pac-12 schools aren't taking a Baptist school when they can get get much better parts to match up with Texas. The Texoma 4 of UT, Tech, OSU, and OU are probably going to end up out west when this is all said and done. I suspect they could also get joined by the Kansas schools, too. That would bring 6 CST schools to the Pac.

The LHN doesn't end until 2031, and I can see them wanting to get that cash until then, which is $15 million annually. What UT does is very interesting, because they could keep the Big 12 conference going, leave to join another conference, or just go independent in football until 2031 ends.

Here's my UNT worry here with all of this. The Tex-Ok-Kan teams move, leaving TCU, Baylor, Iowa State, and WVU out. The AAC adds Iowa State to get back to 12 full members, then the MWC adds in these two Texas private schools to go west. This means we are stuck in CUSA for the long-term, which keeps us below the other G5 schools in DFW.

I don't see Iowa State moving down to a G5 conference. I would think Texas and Tech move to PAC 12, OU and OSU to Big !0. The 6 "left behind" programs could merge with AAC, but I doubt it. Maybe CUSA and SBC work something out geographically .Unfortunately I don't see any opportunity for UNT to move up when the Big 12 "left behind" 6 teams poach the ACC for another 6 programs. When they do, I assume SMU would be invited instead of us, leaving the AAC raiding CUSA and the SBC for new members. We then should have the opportunity to join a watered down AAC, with the remaining CUSA and SBC programs merging. Regardless, the next few years should be interesting.

PAC-12 probably won’t take Baylor because they just don’t culturally align with the rest of the conference. I believe that there is actually a law in Oklahoma that whatever conference OU gets put in that it must also accept OSU as well.

Completely agree on Baylor and that realignment scenario is very probable. Within the new commissioner of the PAC-12 coming from Vegas and the casino business he would be the guy to make a move like this. I don’t see any other move UT would make. There are so many California transplants in Austin that it’s making more and more sense as time goes by. At least with the new playoff system we a chance 😅

So the Big Ten has strong academics. Every school in the Big Ten is in the prestigious AAU for research institutions. Nebraska is the only non-AAU in that league and that is because they got removed after the Big Ten admitted them. Back when realignment was really cooking, the Big Ten Commissioner was interested in UT, but he sent out an email that detailed the “Tech Problem”, as UT wanted Tech with them wherever they were going, probably for political cover in Texas. But Tech’s academics in the P5 are just awful compared to others, so the Big Ten wouldn’t take them. Now, extrapolate this to OU and OSU. There’s no way OSU gets in there…none.

I’d almost have to doubt that UT is wanting Texas Tech that much.  Any of y’all ever been to Lubbock?

Can anyone tell me the last time Texas Tech won a conference football championship outright?  One year in the SWC they tied for the championship with 2 or 3, but since they entered the SWC I can’t remember when they were the sole champion.   I stand to be corrected.

You'd be standing a long time, Jim.

Tech was co-champs in the SWC twice.  Zip for the B12.

Yep, this is what I remember, also.

They want Tech to avoid the legal/political mess of leaving Baylor (and TCU) behind when their attorneys get the bat signal to sue…

Yet LJ I was talking about the RR’s winning a sole championship w\o sharing with anyone.  Guess I left out the very important word—sole?😆

No, I got ya--my wording was probably confusing.  You are right--TT has never won an outright football championship!  👍

And I find that totally amazing that TT has not won even  “1” conference football championship in my lifetime.  ••• They do a good job of hiding that glaring fact from recruits, don’t they?

Wording?👀 My wording is always confusing to me so I start adding pictures, videos & (sometimes) multi-colored fonts.🙄
