The FAU head coach signed a five-year contract with a base salary of $750,000, including annual incremental increases. For the 2024 college football campaign, Herman’s salary will be $1 million. He’ll earn $1.25 million in 2025, $1.35 million in 2026, and in the final year of the contract, he’ll earn $1.5 million.
Herman hadn’t been a head coach since the 2020 season when Texas fired him. He spent time as an analyst for the Chicago Bears in 2021, but made his return to college football when the Owls hired him after the 2022 season.
With FAU headed to the American Athletic Conference, the Owls needed a coach who had experience and could recruit the area well. Herman recruited well at his previous stops, and the administration believed he could do it again in Florida.
If FAU terminates his contract, he will be paid a lump sum of 20 weeks of his annual salary or the remainder of the contract, depending on which number is lower.
The coaches caused the NIL issue in the first place with their outsized salaries and ridiculous employment contracts. And you better believe these AD's and coaches all are in on it and look after each other's financial interest. The players saw this and said "screw it" I'm getting paid too.
How many of you on GMG have an employment contract or make what these clowns do a year?
If you add up all the players and coaches and staff, what is that? Like 150 people? Even Ohio State's annual budget is only $215 million. In the business world, managing $200/million/year and 150 people isn't that big a deal and you certainly won't be compensated like a college football coach. This system is rigged!
I say that coaches should be at will employees like the rest of us, now that they screwed up College Football.
At the end of last year I graded Morris with a D (up from mid-season D- because he won the last two games). Many thought that grade was too low, but so far, I think either D or D- is still appropriate. Here are the wins under coach Morris along with the records of the teams we beat.
2023
LaTech (3-9)
ACU (5-6)
Temple (3-9)
Tulsa (4-8)
UAB (4-8)
2024
South Alabama (6-5)
SFA (7-5)
Wyoming (2-9)
Tulsa (3-8)
FAU (2-9)
So after two seasons, the signature win in coach Morris' tenure is arguably Southland Conference and FCS-level Stephen F. Austin. Let that sink in. If South Alabama beats Texas State on Saturday, then we can probably elevate them to the signature win. Yay us.
If it wasn't for Chad Morris falling in our laps, I'm not sure we get any of the five wins we currently have. This was/is the guy to take us to the next level? What a complete debacle.
