The 25 per year limit will have to be changed soon ....

"Everybody is basically just suggesting, 'I'm not going to recruit high school players anymore,'" said Todd Berry, the executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, who has been sitting in on conference coaches' meetings along with the AFCA's own coaches' meetings. "Recruiting off other campuses is going to be the norm and high school recruiting is going to go away. I don't think there's any way around that unless the 25 initials gets changed. I don't think that's a hypothetical. I think that's a fact, because I know what the coaches are going to do because we're on these calls together."

Yup. Have to change the rule. Something like 25 spots for high school and JUCOs (like normal), 10 for D1 scholarship transfers.

Also, if a team loses 20 scholarship seniors and 15 guys to the portal, if they went and got 15 guys from the portal they’d only have 10 spots to replace the departing seniors. Because of seniors getting an extra year this isn’t really affecting teams, but it will and the last thing we need is kids not getting scholarships because of the 25-limit when spots are available on the 85.

I don't thank many realize how few jucos there are that have football teams.  So there is no way there is going to be a flood of high school players going into jucos.

The problem would have gone away without the extra year of eligibility.   Now, however they have opened pandora's box with the the one free transfer rule.

G5 teams will become primarily recruiting grounds for P5's to ponder almost at will.   A very bad rule that could severely damage the competitiveness of college sports.

HS recruiting isn't going away. They'll have to fall in somewhere, at some level. Where do you think the transfers are originally coming from? Mars?

Going away? No. But there are undoubtedly less HS kids getting FBS scholarships across the country. Look at Texas State’s class. None.

Teams are losing 10+ guys to the portal and replacing them with 10+ guys from the portal. But that eats into the 25-per class signing limit, so they can only bring on 10 or so high school kids when they used to bring in 20-25.

People continually overlook the impact everyone getting a free season of eligibility is having and are attributing it all to the portal. There is essentially one senior class exiting, split up between the end of last season (2020) and the end of next season (2021).

After 2022 teams will finally have a full senior class departure. At that point they will have to replenish, not just swap out. Hopefully by then we see something in place so that teams can replace the transfer they lose AND still bring in HS and JUCOs to replenish lost Seniors.

I heard one suggestion that sounded interesting. If the player chooses to transfer then the school would be able to replace that "slot", but if the school did not choose to retain, or encouraged the player to look elsewhere they would not get a credit towards that transfer. Not sure how you would determine if they were actually being pushed out?? A couple of other ransom thoughts --

Would like to see the "one time no sit" be available to incoming freshmen after completing two years at the school. They need to do something to incentify college to take HS players versus taking transfers.

With more transfers and less scholarships for HS players "better" players might be available for G5 school. The key will be for staffs to determine which kids will sign and hopefully stay and not play from the start to play one year and then transfer like the lineman this year from Charlotte who transferred to Arkansas. It's great to get the talent, but how much do you want to invest for someone with one foot out the door before they arrive?

It's not the 4*/5* players who will be impacted it will be the lower 3* players. Schools are choosing to replace with potentially more "ready" players compared to kids who might have to work their way up the ladder. If the 25 per class rule does not change it will only get worse.

Why do I think it will change soon - While the NCAA could care less about the G5 impact, P5 programs are losing backup players and are not happy. When the P5 starts asking the change will come.

Again, I think this would not be as big an issue if a full senior class had not been given eligibility to come back next year. If those guys had been pushed out 1. Less players would have transferred out to find playing opportunities elsewhere and 2. Teams would be more inclined to keep their players since they would already be losing seniors so losing a bunch to the portal but only being able to bring in 25 would mean losing more players than they can sign.

Tykieast Crawford’s can happen, but they can and have happened before the transfer portal as well. Maybe they will happen more frequently now, but I don’t think that’s enough to alter your recruiting.
