Such is the case regarding Texas Tech's reliance on the transfer portal to build the current roster. Historically, transfers have been crapshoots at best in terms of making a big impact on the new team, but times have changed. The advent of the transfer portal in 2018 combined with much less restrictions and penalties for transfers has drastically altered the recruiting landscape.

The result is the quality and quantity of transfers have improved dramatically. Not only that, but often times these players have been developed for a couple years in strong programs, are immediately eligible, plus have multiple seasons to play. Unlike high school recruits who in most cases need at least one or two seasons of development to play at the Power Five level, these transfers are ready to be plugged in and play without mortgaging the future and without the transition season you see so often with junior college additions.
