Man, the portal is blowing up this off season. I don’t know if this will kill CFB or build it up making it more competitive across the board. Either way, I do t like it. There is no commitment anymore.

Need to hold coaches and administrators to that same standard then. Coaches can’t leave and administrators can’t fire until the contract is up

Saw something on twitter about how there are more in the transfer portal than there are roster spots available and a lot of kids are gonna end their football careers without finding another home

That is a risk. Current team is not obligated to bring them back.

Roster spots available where? Just at the FBS level, D1 level, or all levels?

Also has a lot to do with seniors getting an extra year while a new class of high school and JUCO players are being added on top.

In what way could you envision this killing college football?

A lot of those transferring are starters or play a lot. There is no following a player for 3-4 years. Players will now jump to another team just to get more bowl games, TV time....kind of like what a happening in the NBA. Lakers are running that league. Putting teams together...3 or 4 players get together from different team to try and join another specific team.

The increased portal activity will do a few things:

1. Increase parity across the D1 landscape as more high rated players will spread around to different programs looking for playing time, which will elevate the level of play for more programs. These players will bring with them D1 experience.  For example Charlotte got a Notre Dame transfer that in previous years would not have happened.

2. It will also limit the fringe HS or JUCO player from getting an extra look by many programs when they can go to the portal and find an older player with experience.

3. D2 schools will pick up higher rated HS players as the D1 programs deal with elevated roster numbers.

Apples and oranges. One is an employee, the other is not. All players have a chance to transfer. Do not confuse the responsibilities of one vs the other

What? How is it different.. The coach “commits” to a program the same why an athlete “commits”. I’d argue we should hold the coaches to a higher standard since they’re the ADULTS selling these KIDS on there program, often giving promises they can’t keep. Why should a kid be held to a commitment they made when they were 17/18 years old when a grown man can’t even do that?

**for me, I don’t care when coaches leave. As long as those players that were recruited by them get the opportunity to reevaluate their future as well**

We had a Notre Dame transfer a few years ago....without the portal

All this to say, you can’t be upset at one and not the other. And vice versa

The morality and authenticity of the game. The NCAA's lack of backbone planted that seed, their progressive rules will push it over the edge. The agreement to allow players to be paid via "likeness" will be the final straw. Tired of hearing about Alabama, UT, Clemson, Notre Dame, Ohio State and maybe 3 or 4 other programs? Well, I hope not because their deep pocketed boosters and business owners will make sure they stay at the top. Let's not even mention the "G5", but a lot of "P5" programs are going to be left in the dust; moreso than they already have been.

The current iteration of the Lakers have won 1 championship. The NBA has traditionally lacked parity, even before players moved much via free agency. From 1980-2005, 7 different teams took turns trading those 26 championships. In the last decade of the NBA we saw 7 different teams win those 10 championships. There is at least as much parity as there always has been.

Guyton was not a Norte Dame transfer. We signed him out of Trinity Valley CC.

He left ND to play JUCO and then to NT

Ooh boy. The NCAA is many things, but there is nothing progressive about them. They held onto players not being able to profit off of their likenesses until state legislation forced their hand. They were literally shutting down GoFundMe accounts setup by players to promote just, non-profit causes like sick family members and other charitable causes.

As for the gap between G5 and P5, the only way to help that is to expand the CFP. Even within P5 the gap is widening between the teams you mentioned and the rest because the top recruits know where they have to choose to play in the CFP and Bowl Games don’t do much to drive recruit interest. NCAA has to expand to be more inclusive. Even the BCS had 8-10 teams, which created a lot of parity during that era.

Right, but that’s not the same as getting a Notre Dame transfer like the Charlotte ND transfer who OkieFan was referring to. He chose to re-start his recruitment at a JUCO and see what offers he could get from there, not go directly to North Texas from ND.

Not a problem with this, but it will turn into a way to pay players to attend your school.

I'm referring to their rulings of late and of course their complete lack of control.

Again, their hand has been forced. It was either allow it, allow it to only be legal for schools in states like FL and CA and risk the top players only going there, or kick schools from FL and CA out of the NCAA.
