Comments on ND's search for a new DC

(Just wondering if Seth thought we had the players to run our defense this year?)

But Kelly said the Irish, who have based out of a four-man front, will be open-minded in the interview process.

“As it relates to scheme itself, we’ve recruited to a base four down (linemen),” Kelly said. “That doesn’t mean that we can’t play three down, because we do. As you know in our nickel and dime package, we’re primarily in a three-down package.

So as long as the system can marry with our recruiting, that’s the most important thing. As long as it marries with the recruiting we’ve been doing over the last three and four years, I’m open to what the system looks like. It doesn’t necessarily have to be always four down. We can be in some three down and some four down. But it can’t be — we’re not going to a 3-4 defense. And that’s not going to happen. We will be a team that is continuously looking at our personnel that we’ve been recruiting to match the scheme.”

It believe this is our biggest problem on D and that is being predictable. I thought Bowen ran a 4 man front at Kansas so I had hoped we would be mixing it up. It didn’t happen and it needs to change for next year.

I wish that philosophy was used all around our program. We’re still running an offense for a gunslinger like Mason and expecting a runner like Bean to execute it. This year, we desperately needed more plays designed for Bean’s strength as a runner.

I agree with @El Paso Eagle and the quote's from Brian Kelly and the timing of the decision allows for coaches around the country that may be a positional coach, for example, to look at the personnel, look at last years film, and put together a presentation as to why they would be a great fit for the program and compete for the job.  When you're third from the bottom of FBS Football in Defense, there's nowhere to go but up and you've got a HC, AD, to convince and ultimately a room of assistants to convince and buy in, all are relying on the next hire to get it right!  All included want the best for the program, there's a lot on line, but opening the job up this way and at this time could allow for a "wild card" to come in and "wow" you with perspectives you haven't seen before - all things considered, it's a good place for the program to be in.  Let's see how it plays out, there may be some folks that were mentioned previously that will reach out, and if you're on the inside, you're waiting to see who will reach out, but the onus is now on them, and if there's someone they had in mind that attacks the opening with a powerful presentation and thoughts, then it's a win-win, it's a person you thought could get it done, paired with a plan to get it done!
