The more I have watched the way QBs and receivers are protected and, maybe more importantly, the "gloves" that receivers wear there should be asterisk or separate categories for all of the video-game numbers that are put up. And please, do not say the gloves do not make a tremendous difference.

Another thing we often forget is there was a time when college freshmen could not play varsity ball.   In fact, I believe Ron Shanklin only had three years to establish his stats as did Mean Joe.  They both played on the freshman team their first year.

There would have to be a lot of asterickes to account for all the different factors that have favorably affected current athletic performances versus the past.

Much better playing surfaces, nutrition, elimination of extreme bad weather contests, ridiculous hotel stays before home games, expansion of coaching staffs, much better healthcare, improvement in equipment, etc.   For example, I read that the current basketball shoes add 3 to 4 inches in jumping ability compared to the old canvas shoes.

There are a few negative factors, such as stricter enforcement of eligibility rules, advanced scrutiny of any big play,

The almost elimination of the multi-sport athlete.

As pointed to above, the much greater number of games that athletes play.   Football used to be a 10 game schedule with a bowl game.   Now the twelve game regular season is standard with the possibility of adding playoff and bowl games.

When comparing for example Steve Ramsey vs Fine stats, you should consider that Fine played approximately twice as many varsity games in his college career.

It was also almost unheard of to throw the ball over 30 x’s a game. There  were only 2 WR’s and 2-3 RB’s in the backfield.

Get rid of the “Best of All-Time” stats/records;  when the era’s were apples and organges.
