DRC column: UNT isn't doing much to dispel notion it won't be the same without Fine, and that's a problem

Well, we didn't win WITH Mason in his senior year. That wasn't his fault, but I think it's fair to point out that we are one win away from last year's total, and that's with a crazy pandemic throwing everything out of whack. It's not like it's our offense that is sinking us (it's certainly a problem particularly for its lack of consistency). 

I'm concerned our offense gets worse next year without Darden's skills bailing us out.

Now, if we could prove we could have even an average defense, that would be something else entirely.

The offense will be fine but we definitely need to have a more reliable and consistent passing game.  

At times our defense has flown around and when in good position they can make plays.  They’re just so consistently out of position and I think that’s a combination of scheme and discipline.

The biggest problem is our Defense cant stop anyone and no one respects it.  LATECH provide why we cant stop at team on 3rd or 4th down.    I would never punt against us unless it was 4 and 15 or more.   Does our offense have like 10 plays they run?

Completely agree but, if you want to nitpick, it might be interesting to see 3rd down conversion rates, comparing Fine's final two years to 2020.

Fine can't play defense, but an offense that stays on the field equates to rest for the defense.

I (& others) were Mason Fine fans from the git-go when some on GMG were not.  
What many noticed about Mason was by his 2’nd or 3’rd game there were hardly any critiques of him being inconsistent or constantly hot/cold throughout any season.  
 I hope Jason Bean can find a similar comfort zone.  I think we need to hire a veteran QB coach who has a reputation of making field generals out of college QB’s & helps them to where they don’t throw the football 1-2 feet above being catchable.
