This is all well and good but classical music competitions are traditionally fraught with political bias. Unless these are judged in the blind, which they are not, the results are quite possibly skewed.

The university does not talk much about an ill-fated jazz competition organized by Wynton Marsalis a year or two ago. Prior to the competition, the school talked this up quite a bit, with the president leading a large UNT delegation to New York City. Some invited schools like Berklee and Miami had the good sense not to participate. I told myself, this is not going to end well.

Sure enough, not only did our world famous One o'Clock Jazz Band fail to win, they were not even in the top three.
