And so it begins. Let’s hope it’s only 1 of very few games that are cancelled. Bowl season is the greatest season of them all!

They aren't making great choices out in EP these days it seems. Any number of venues would have gladly taken the opportunity for a lot of reasons.

I think for the Sun Bowl it as much about giving back to the community as anything. My guess is that their main goal was just not to be able to say "we played the game", but actually have an event that gave back to the community. There are many other local activities and events that coordinate with the Sun Bowl.

I guess it would have been UTEP vs Ok State in the sun bowl this year and since the game is not being played UTEP wins by forfeit and is the winner of the 2020 Sun Bowl.  

Growing up in EP I say a lot of good teams play in the Sun Bowl when there were not a million bowl games. Saw Dorsett and Johnny Rogers play in the game, not against each other.

My dad was involved with the Sun Bowl for years. Its about money. If by giving back you mean filling hotels, TV deals, filling up restaurants, bars, ticket, sales, events, ect. Then yes. Financially it gives to the community. The current decision to not move it means not a dime is made. All the stuff surrounding it is fun and obviously not happening this year but there's something to be said for saying we played it in light of everything. Especially to say we are a very old but important bowl so we are playing it. Regardless if for one game. Could have been cool to sell its history and EP. My thoughts anyway.

I use to love going to the Sun Bowl growing up too. Good times back then. The Sun Bowl seems to have lost its luster in a sea of bowl games kinda like you said. Great memories.

I was going to say “how can you play the Sun Bowl outside of the Sun Bowl itself?!?” in response to the above. But then I remembered that the Cotton Bowl is played in Arlington...

And given that most are in sunny states that aren’t really managing the pandemic well, that might be the right call. Attendance won’t help the communities and viewers don’t care much about minor bowls.

      Please keep in mind that it looks like shortly they will be changing the roster limits and the amount of players eligible to be put on scholarships. I believe then you will have to keep the minimum of 85 but you will be able to go higher if you choose but with a lower total number of players that can be in the program.

      1. I have us at about 80 scholarship players. This count does not include Makenzie McGill who we almost assuredly need to put on scholarship to keep, and Evan Jackson who deleted his transfer portal post and hasn’t posted anything since. Also does not include high school commit Terrence Lewis who still seems in line to sign in February. That being said, we probably could sign a few more HS guys this February. We have space and likely will have more space after spring to bring in more portal guys this summer if needed. 2. Probably will have a better idea on this after spring when we have a better idea of where we still are weaker than we want to be. We have pretty good numbers at each position. 3. There definitely will be more transfers after spring but pure speculation on who. Larry Moore appears to be passed over at tackle, and I doubt he wants to spend his last season of eligibility on the bench. Same for VJ Bronson at DT. At safety I don’t expect Isheem Young to come back but I could be wrong. He came here because of Caponi and we seem to have been recruiting that position as if he isn’t coming back. BJ Allen at safety looks like he is in danger of getting passed up by multiple guys so he could be better off looking elsewhere for more playing time. I think Zach Evans is similarly buried on the depth chart. I‘d be surprised if any of those 5 guys were still here after spring. Those are 5 spots I pretty much expect to open up just based on guys who are sort of the odd men out at their spots, but looks like they’ll be here through spring to have a chance to carve out bigger roles.

      Many people on this board, constantly talk about competing with SMU. We should also pay attention to what TCU and other programs are doing, so we have a bar to set for ourselves. Ignoring the competition, gets us where we are now.
