That's kind of strange.  Students need to maintain certain standards to keep an academic scholarship, but an athletic scholarship is guaranteed for the year regardless of what the student does, short of getting kicked out of school.

Right. My guess is it’s the same terms of agreement for both an NLI and yearly scholarship renewal
