I see this as an advantage for NT.  With our game against A&M cancelled we only have Houston Baptist to get live play before Southern Meth.  Now, with TCU backing out, Southern Meth has the same number of games(1) before they drive up I-35.

Home game.  Home run.

smut feels it's gonna win the AAC and thinks it's going to be in the FBS playoffs.

They need every game. If they lose that TCU game that's gonna hurt their playoff dreams....

If they are not able to reschedule, does SMU "win" by forfeit? I truly have no idea how this works

That's an interesting question.  We have seen at least one conference (SEC, I believe?) announce their policy for differentiating a cancelation from a forfeit, but I haven't seen any universal NCAA rule for non-conference games, which makes me think it would be determined based on the language of the individual contract between those two schools.

I don’t think Gary Patterson objected to the forfeit of the SMU game.  2 losses in a row to the Pony’s would have not done the psyche of the TCU fans any good.  I bet that game does not get rescheduled.

That is exactly correct!  Some friends of mine were discussing this last nite at the game.
