Kiffin says players whose conferences have decided to postpone fall sports should be free to transfer without penalty

"Kids are having their schools or their conferences deciding to shut down, so they can't play, and a lot of them have a lot of money on the line with the next level, or they just want to play their last year," Kiffin said. "So it's really unfortunate that the NCAA is not allowing them to transfer and be eligible immediately. We're being told that won't even go into a waiver process, so I feel really bad for those kids. It's not their fault. Why can't they come play somewhere? That doesn't make any sense to me."

I mean he's right.  I don't really see spring football happening and that's what those conferences that cancelled are using as the reason for why players shouldn't be able to leave.  A lot of players have NFL dreams, but many more know it's not going to happen and probably won't get the chance to ever play football again because they are done with school after the fall or spring semester and don't want to stick around for another year.  Pretty unfair for them to not even have the option to go try and play somewhere if they'd like.

Does that mean that any players whose teams play in the fall and they, for example, do not get the playing time they want, should be able to transfer to a spring school?

Why wouldn't they be able to?  The rules currently don't allow immediate eligibility when transferring so it's not like they would play both seasons if that's what you're suggesting.

However, I'd love to see a graduate transfer try and do it just to see what the NCAA does.

Kiffin being Kiffin. You hate it or you love it. A good fit for Mississippi I think.

On the other hand: if I am a player who got to play in the fall, can I then transfer at X-mas and play in Spring in the Big10/MAC?

To my knowledge you cannot under any circumstance compete for two different institutions during the same academic year.

As far as what Kiffin is saying, if Justin Fields wanted to transfer to OU or something and play his fall season to prep for the NFL, this would give him that option. However, under the current circumstances, he may opt out of their “spring season” altogether to enter the nfl draft and participate in the combine, etc.
