Lol. And you thought this social distancing was about saving lives. It was about money the whole time.

What the douchebag are you talking about?

Social distancing is to prevent infections. No infection, no need for expensive treatment. You should argue that the political leaders arguing to open early or ignore the virus were hoping to profit from the spread of the virus.
Again if this is a bit it is the worst. If it isn’t then you are the worst.

This whole experience has been a stark lesson that our healthcare system from top to bottom need to be reformed. And nothing more than this bullshit where we subsidize companies to develop drugs them they turn around and gouge us.

Exhibit A of what happens when Americans don't have any desire to think of things from a worldly perspective. Things you can't understand or don't care to understand you find simple answers to explain. Many times these answers come across as conspiracy theories. To think that the entire world would practice social distancing so that an American company could profit off of one form of treatment a global pandemic is completely asinine. It's bird-brain responses like this that make me embarrassed that 40% of my nation is full of this type of mindset.

you know what’s asinine is we have over 30 million Americans unemployed due to a “pandemic” with over a 99% recovery rate. How many of the 200k deaths were actually killed by Covid? My friends 92 year old grandma died last night... she had stage 4 cancer... she tested positive for Covid. She will count as a Covid death. If you are under the age of 75 and have no underlying condition you are virtually at no risk to catching Covid and dying. I guarantee more lives will be affected by unemployment than would have ever been affected by Covid if we didn’t do all the social distancing and prevent herd immunity from the get go.

This has all been covered already - but you are incorrect. Sweden and UK are the gold standard for this experiment. UK gave up quickly because of their mortality rate. Sweden stayed on course and suffered the *same* economic troubles as all the other EU nations, but had a much higher death toll. Herd immunity on a massive scale requires a vaccine.

Are you walking around maskless and just skirting all the recommendations?

If you are following recommendations that are in place now - you are part of the solution. We see the Dallas County numbers declining at the expected rate and if we keep the mask mandate and gathering restrictions in place - we will be open and running again soon enough. If not and we keep playing these games about how many people will survive an minimizing the actual risk - we will continue to not control the pandemic.

You example of the stage 4 cancer death is just asinine. You know that is not the norm. It is setting up a strawman and then attacking that.

Yesterday was a good day in Dallas - two people in their 40's dead. one person in their 60's. One in their 90's:

Tuesday was not a good day - 31 dead. 2/3rds of those were below your threshold of when it matters if you live or die:

If you don’t curb the spread then a 99% recovery rate means 3.27 million dead from the virus if everyone gets it. You ok with that?
That is completely ignoring the economic and public health impacts and only focusing on deaths. Also ignoring the medium to long term negative health effects on those who recover.
Herd immunity without a vaccine is bullshit. But let’s look at the minimum for herd immunity at 60%. That means close to 200 million infected. Again, ignoring the health care costs and missed work of those that get sick (-and the impact on the healthcare workers who have to treat them) that puts us at nearly 2,000,000 dead. You ok with that?

You know what helps that 99% recovery rate more than anything?
The fact that blanket safeguards like stopping people from packing stadiums/concerts/etc... and just generally not going out if you don't really have to... plus masks and whatever other safeguards people are doing for themselves.    This keeps the "curve" flattened just enough so there are healthcare resources to provide those who have serious fights with this virus a chance to live.

Remove all of that stuff and imagine showing up to the hospital with severe symptoms.  The triage nurse decides if you're worth treating over the myriads of others who are presenting in the same way, or leaving to fend for yourself (re: die) based on some rubric of your symptoms.   That's a very real scenario if/when the healthcare system gets too taxed.

Exactly. Of course trying to convince the rubes that the scenario would have been likely is nearly impossible.

Pretty funny line in there with the US demanding lower prices, then complaining the those socialist medicine systems unfairly demanding lower prices first. Pretty soon the conservatives may sound like the liberals. I will welcome that.

The problem with judging Sweden is that they ripped the bandaid off. Instead of flattening (and lengthening) the curve, they let it run its course. Yes, their deaths per capita from the virus are in the top ten worldwide but other countries are are experiencing second waves that Sweden doesn’t seem to be dealing with. We won’t know how Sweden compares for sure until we are on the other side of this thing and we have the full story. You can’t  tell me who wins a fight midway through the bout based on one fighter throwing haymakers in the first couple of rounds while the other fighter is sizing him up.

I mean, this is true and all, but it isn't really how it is portrayed. They are saying they aren't recommending a mask policy YET, because they are not spiking. Their message was from the start - this is serious - this is our plan - and they had mandatory spacing requirements and limited the mass gathers to sub 50. They thought that was enough... they did NOT go full UK and just try to force their way through it.

This is the most important part: "It seems 80% of the people, when asked, ‘Are you following the advice of the agency?’ responded, ‘Yes, we are following the advice of the agency.'"

If you have 80% compliance on a NATIONAL policy - you are doing great!

Sweden does not *really* earn the laissez faire title honestly... they had a policy, just more liberal. They had guidelines in keeping schools open, it wasn't the wild west like Georgia.

And Sweden has stated that they probably got it wrong.

That’s not exactly what Sweden said but is what the news outlets want you to take away from it.

There are two people talking and  it is being portrayed as "Sweden said.."  Just like the anti-masker/hoax side saying that Sweden is saying to not wear masks - that is not what the health minister is saying at all.

And I think the Prime Minister is the one saying they should have done it differently - since it had a huge impact on their elderly.

In June, Sweden’s top epidemiologist that crafted the strategy said the strategy was flawed. I believe their deaths and infections have slowed dramatically of late so he has been feeling more vindicated. Honestly the jury is still out and reactions in Sweden mixed. They do note that even with lax restrictions, social distancing is largely being followed.

This article is fairly current:

This is from a June interview:
Sweden’s top epidemiologist has admitted his strategy to fight Covid-19 resulted in too many deaths, after persuading his country to avoid a strict lockdown.

“If we were to encounter the same illness with the same knowledge that we have today, I think our response would land somewhere in between what Sweden did and what the rest of the world has done,” Anders Tegnell said in an interview with Swedish Radio.

I know it is semantics but I feel he was saying they would’ve made adjustments to their strategy and not that they were flat wrong in their strategy.
