Does Apogee stay the name forever or can the naming rights be renegotiated?  It seems with all the growth of the area naming rights might garner more dough.   Anyone know what Apogee is paying us for the naming rights?  thx

The deal is 20 years, for $20 million. I don't see any reason the university would want to end it.

If I recall correctly it is not all cash, but a lot of "in kind". That is not necessarily all that attractive. That said, changing it only makes sense if there is a suitor that is willing to pay enough for it to be worth it to buy em out.

I am more in favor of giving Apogee appreciation for their support, than trying to break a contract.

I doubt there are a lot of entities willing to spend millions for naming rights of a G5 stadium.

Agree with both. Plus there are naming rights on just about everything. For example, the field. So you could have Toyota Field at Apogee Stadium.

Apogee has been great too from a branding perspective. The local media can even easily say it with ease and confidence. It’s short sweet and not “taco town stadium” or investment analysis field or something whack like that.

@outoftown I wonder if the "in kind" equates to wifi in the dorms or some such?

Not just dorms. The apartments I lived in off-campus (were considered student apartments and required to be a student to lease them) back in 2011-2013 only had one internet service provider, which was Apogee (and their internet sucked).

In astronomy, the "apogee" is the point in the orbit of the moon or a satellite at which it is furthest from the earth. Maybe this can explain why the WiFi at games sucks.

There's Wi-Fi at Apogee? Do I have to be paying tuition to use it?

That’s actually a great idea. Start a bidding war between the two casinos who both want highway traffic.

Maybe for the new basketball arena.  I actually like the name Apogee Stadium.  Look, they came along and dumped $20 million in our lap when we were not good, showing faith in the direction of the program.  I respect them for that.  Besides, we are tied to them for 20 years.
