Last year with SMU and La Tech, the place was packed.

There were probably more Louisiana Tech fans than there were SMU fans.

Why does this bowl exist again?

I still standby they should cut one bowl game a year for about seven or eight seasons and see how that goes.  There are 40 of them (so 80 spots to fill) and 130 teams that play in the FBS.  I would think you should be in the top half of the Division to play in one.

I wouldn't advocate dropping several at one time because the shock would be much greater, but a slow roll down over a few years would work.   And yes I know this would effect more teams from G5 leagues.  My idea to counteract that would be giving 7-5 teams priority over 6-6 teams regardless of conference affiliation.  That way a 7-5 MAC school would be selected over a 6-6 Miami.  Something like that could keep it from being too biased toward the big boys.

Free market capitalism. People organizing it have demand from schools to play there and demand from sponsors to be affiliated and demand from television to show the game. If it sells tickets, then there is even more money to pay to the schools.

With all the local bowls that would love to have NT, it's a pity just couldn't get it done this year. Even with ESPN controlling most of the minor bowls and matching teams for tv appeal, a local team even at 6-6 would be a coveted target.

I get ticket revenue isn't the biggest factor in these games, but if I flip thru the channels and stumble upon a game with 500 people in the stands, that doesn't get me to stay tuned in.

I don’t think the number of people in the stands has ever had an impact on whether or not I watch a game.

Usually, ESPN works to NOT show empty stands.

You watch football games based on how many people are in the stands? That is odd, usually one watches the football game to see if its worth watching.
