Wasn't Chris Petersen the coach that essentially put Boise State on the FBS football map?  Or, am I thinking of someone else?

Correct

Dan Hawkins really put them on the map. Petersen just took it and ran with it.

Dan Hawkins "put them on the map" (as in ranked in the top 25 multiple years in a row before taking the Colorado job).    Peterson inherited his team and took it to new heights.

Yes.  I remember now that Hawkins put Boise on the map.  Petersen continued making them a top team.  It should be interesting to see who their next coach will be.

He may just be tired.  He turned down jobs for years while schools tried to entice him away from Boise, and many thought it was because he liked the relative pressure free life there.  Washington would come with different expectations and duties and maybe just wore him down.

Yep it was Hawkins. His success at Boise got him the gig at CU. Nepotism derailed Hawkins career there when he made every attempt to start his non college talented son at QB over several years.

It was reported that he needed to "recharge," so their could be something to this.  Spend a year working for a network much like Urban Meyer has done, and then have  your pick of openings.

That's been the general consensus. Peterson believes in more work/life balance than is generally afforded to professional coaches. Reports are that he's simply worn out.
