That’s why No. 21 Appalachian State of the Sun Belt will have a strong case if it can run the table.

The Mountaineers (6-0) already have a win at North Carolina, who nearly upset defending national champion Clemson, and on Nov. 9, they visit South Carolina — the same Gamecocks that upset then-No. 3 Georgia.

A 13-0 Appalachian State would have the most impressive wins, but by all metrics, would have played a much softer conference schedule than the American or Mountain West contenders.

So, in an ironic twist, the American will claim its champion deserves to be in the Cotton Bowl over Appalachian State, using the same “conference schedule strength”-based rationale that was used against the AAC in past years.

If SMU happens to run their table (Lord help us all) their wins over actually-ranked teams (TCU at the time & previously-ranked Memphis) will be better than "well, App St beat <xyz>-team-that-almost-beat-<123>-team".
Heck, a 1-loss Cincinnati team, assuming they're the ones SMU would play in an AAC CCG would also have better wins under their belts, only losing to CFP-bound Ohio St. while beating a surely top10-ranked SMU during the AAC CCG.

I still think SMU will lose somewhere along the way, maybe even a few times. My guess is that they lose one of the next two road games, at UH and at Memphis, and even if they win the AAC West, they won't beat Cincinnati...

I think Appy State is sitting in the cat bird seat for the G5, but if they lose to South Carolina, I suspect that Cincy or Boise State will be the team again in the BCS bowl game.

If this comes to past, I can just hear those AP State fans and the Sun Belt board.  God help us all!

Again, in true North Texas timing, we leave a conference that never once had a team ranked in the entire time we were there, to leave for CUSA and it immediately falls down to the depths of college football conferences and the SBC gains a team that has become a great G5 program and gets ranked and has the inside track for the G5 bowl bid in the Cotton Bowl.

Allah hates UNT...

I was always confused as to why we added FIU and Charlotte over Georgia Southern, Troy and App State.

But good lord freaking App State is ranked in the top 25 and in the conversation for a bowl vs a P5 opponent in prime time at the cotton bowl while we are hoping to win 3 more games so we can play Akron in a bowl game 1700 miles away at 10 AM on ESPN2 what a shame.

Our conference decided to listen to the AD at East Carolina, who was in CUSA at the time and wanted local teams to play in their division. So they looked around and decided TV markets were the way to go, so they added Charlotte and  ODU, at the same time they added us, FIU, La Tech, and UTSA (also for the TV market). It was rather obvious that ECU was bailing to the AAC ASAP, but our leadership acted as if they wouldn’t, so we get stuck with those three EST  teams instead. Well, shockingly, ECU does get invited to the AAC, along with Temple, Tulane and Tulsa, which is how WKU, FAU and MUTS got invited to CUSA from the old SBC. Basically the SBC then invited Appy State, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, and Coastal Carolina to join their league, while kicking out Idaho and NMSU.

And now you know the rest of the Lower G5 story...

Yep, it was obvious and we'll known that ECU was going to bolt.  Well, everyone except CUSA leadership.

SMU got a nice win on the road tonight in rainy Houston. Their dream season is still alive. Dear Lord, if they do somehow go undefeated and get into the Cotton Bowl, our worst fears will be upon us. We will never stop hearing about their turnaround and how great this is for Dallas by the old guard SWC loving media members.

All of this reiterates to me just how much we blew by falling apart down the stretch in CUSA play. Last year was our chance. Now, we not only have taken a step or two backwards, we have to watch the 1% from University Park enjoy a Renaissance right in front of our faces.

We must have really pissed off the football gods something fierce decades ago...

Regardless how they finish this year, we’ll knock them off next year.  LOCK IT UP!  GMG!
