There must be rivalry for someone to be considered a rival (by definition that is a prerequisite) , and frankly there is none.

On the UTSA board there have been a grand total of two new posts this week: How to watch the game on TV?, and What's your score prediction?.

We've been trying valiantly to get any kind of reaction from them, nothing. It's like watching kittens bat around a dead mouse.

UTSA, aided by some blown calls, was able to pull an upset North Texas in 2013. That 'miracle' was long ago. Since then its been pretty much domination by North Texas, and we will have won four of the last five after Saturday's game.

So, can we please stop pretending that there is any type of rivalry, neither on or off the field.

See, when we have to keep making declarations every year about whether a particular game is or is not a rivalry, that to me only confirms that it is a rivalry--for better or worse.

Now, is UTSA NT's primary rival?  No, and I don't think that's even close.  That's not a knock on them, just an observation of fan/player/coach emotions about each game.  The SMU-North Texas game is a big deal in the DFW area, and it always seems to result in massive fan overreactions on both sides.  The UTSA-North Texas game is a minor rivalry, where it matters a lot to certain pockets of fans.

If it got you this angry, I think you got yourself a rival.

I'll own it, I hate those pavement chickens. They made us look bad once upon a time and I want to football punch them in the nards every season from now until Bretts parking pass expires.

No anger, just disappointment. There is nobody to have a rivalry with? They're not there supporting their team any longer.

The SMU week, and even the Abiline Christian game week were bull of banter and barbs from rival fans from both schools. Even Cal had some light verbal jousting leading up to the game.

For UTSA there's just nothing there. We may joke about them, but there is no interaction, no taunting, and nothing that remotely resembles rivalry.

My only problem with calling them a rival is it's a bad look for UNT if our rival has only been around for 8 years.

Rivalries should have some history.

This is as forced as the fake "silver boot" between the Rangers and Astros. I understand rivalries are important but they should happen organically...not because a beat writer insists on it.

Joking about and taunting them seems mean. Like picking on a less fortunate kid.

The best perspective I can add is, how did SMU view us 5 years ago? Not even a blip. How did UTSA see us? Opportunity. We've had a LOT of success since. UTSA still see's opportunity. SMU is still to be convinced.

We are firmly entrenched between those 2. This was our year to finally get out. We didn't. So back into our trench we go for another 2 years. Maybe one day we'll rise above them there chicken eaters, to finally feast on pony.

You guys are struggling to make this into some kind of "we think we're superior to them" statement. Its not.

The point is, and I am going to type this slowly for you... NOBODY ON THE OTHER SIDE SEEMS TO CARE ABOUT THEIR TEAM ANYMORE. How can you have a rivalry with that?

It's like saying that you have a passionate love/hate affair with a cardboard box.

And by the down arrows, and least three of you could feel quite passionate about a cardboard box.

Don’t knock it.  It hasn’t been too bad actually and I’m doing better financially.

The thing with UTSA is that they arrived into CUSA declaring us as their rival. They got into CUSA because of their TV market, nothing else. We couldn’t get into CUSA until SMU left, while UTSA just starts a program and gets to waltz right in without anyone blocking them or looking down on them. We have had to fight for every single scrap we have ever gotten—then some big market team comes available and they got elevated to our same level, then poor salt all over those wounds by making us their Super Bowl every year and start beating us in recruiting. So they are a rival even if they are the new kid on the block and now that we have fought back, it appears the new kid is folding like a cheap tent.

This.

Heres your Texas CFB hierarchy of looking down at rivals:

UT>A&M>Tech>Baylor>TCU>SMU>UNT>UTSA>Texas State

Nobody cares at all about UH, Rice, or UTEP

Agree with this for the most part, but TCU and Baylor have probably leapfrogged Tech. Both schools recruit several 4 star players every year and Tech is consistently near the bottom of the Big 12 in recruiting. Also, both tcu and Baylor have been much more relevant over the past decade
