Isaac Hines Commits to Mean Green

Isaac Hines (Dallas Molina) was one of the top high school players in the metroplex two years ago.

He was point guard at the Dallas Global Games where he played with Keith Langford (Kansas), Lawrence Roberts (Baylor and Mississippi State), Antoine Wright (Texas A&M), Daniel Horton (Michigan) and other high school stars. Hines made the all-tournament team.

He has played for Collin Co CC the last two seasons. In 2003-2004 Collin Co CC finished with a 29-3 record and was ranked #2 in the nation in Div I of the NJCAA.

Sophomore guard Isaac Hines of Dallas Molina High School was named Player of the Year in the NTJCAC for the 2004 season. Hines averaged 11.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 3.4 steals on the year while leading Collin to its second consecutive NTJCAC Conference Title.

Good stats, but someone who has seen him play, does he pass the eyeball test and is the point guard answer?

I saw him play twice in the Global Games against some of the best under 21-year-old-players in the world. I thought he was the best player on the court for the US team. He was named to the all-tournament team.

I saw him play one game at the Region 5 Div I NJCAA tounrnament at UT-Dallas in early March vs South Plains CC. Hines scored 29 points on 10-17 from the field and 7 of 8 from the foul line. He had 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals. I thought he was Collin County's best player.

He is about 6-0 and is very thin. He doesn't have great speed, but is a very skilled and intelligent player who makes good decisions. He is a good defensive player and is always a threat to steal the ball.

Rivals has him listed as 3 stars...a long time since we had someone rated that hight. Sturns in ranked # 22 in the State of Texas by Texas Hoops.

With quincy williams we have the nucleus of a great recruiting. Two more ships to go, look for some more inside help.

This is a big win for UNT. Hines is one of the better JUCO point guards in teh country. He fills a need position, and has the ability and experience to help UNT right away. kudos to johnny and staff! This kid had some serious offers. Look for UNT to look for athletic size with the remaining 2 spots. I wouldn't rule out another JUCO or possibly 2 with the last two spots. Another scenario is that they bring in Marvin Beatty as a true frosh point that Hines can develop.

I can't emphasize enough how big the signing of hines is for the future of the program. He brings instant athleticism and ability to the point guard position.

Also, what does this do to Marcus Mitchell? Is he going to stick around for next year and probably come off the bench or leave?

Beaty would be a great sign if we didn't need height so desparately. Remember, we lost 6-9 Shawson Johnson, 6-8 Marcus Degrate and 6-7 Will Smith from last season's roster. Incoming freshman Quincy Williams at 6-8 will be the only player over 6-6 other than Barnett. If we can get a couple of proven big guys in this class, I like our chances next year. JJ's recruiting problems might be solved for years to come because it often takes just one breakthrough year.

Hines sounds like the real thing. Point guard is worrisome no more. We may see a lot of three guard offense next year ala Oklahoma State. Can't wait.

Tulsa pursuing one of nations top JC point guards

It is becoming clear that the University of Tulsa is looking to sign a quality junior college point guard this spring. This latest prospect is not only a true point guard on one of the top junior college teams in the nation, but has some rare qualities not found in most point guards.

Isaac Hines is a 5-foot-11 and 180-pound sophomore point guard for Collin County (TX) Community College, which is ranked No. 3 in the latest NJCAA Division I poll, with a 24-1 record. Hines played his high school ball in the Dallas area at Molina High School, where he totaled 481 career steals, second all-time in the high school ranks behind former two-time California High School player of the year and current New Jersey Nets star Jason Kidd.

Out of high school, Hines signed a letter of intent with Lamar University. He red-shirted his freshman season before transferring to Collin County in Plano, TX.

Hines is currently averaging 11.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 5 assists and 3.3 steals per game this season. He is shooting 52.5 percent from the field, 31.4 percent from behind the arc and 70.5 percent of his free throws, while his assist to turnover ratio is 2.6-to-1.

Collin County assistant coach Chip Wilde described Hines “as a true point guard who provides great leadership to our team. He’s not flashy in his play, but is very solid in all phases of the game. He can handle the ball extremely well and distributes it to his teammates.”

“He’s also the best rebounder I have ever seen from the point guard position,” added Wilde. “He’s leading our team in rebounding and uses his strength, quickness and smarts to go after the ball. He has unbelievable hands, which helps him in securing rebounds, but also contributes to his great passing and getting deflections and steals.”

Last season, Hines was named to the NJCAA All-American Team as an honorable mention selection, after averaging 9.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.8 steals per game. He led his team in assists, steals and rebounds, and was also named First-team all-conference in Region V.

In addition to Tulsa, Hines is being recruited by a number of mid to high major programs, and his recruitment is picking up as his team continues to win. He was ranked by the Sporting News in the pre-season as the No. 4 point guard in the nation. Rivals Hoops has Hines as a three star prospect and Prep Stars lists him as one of the top 75 junior college prospects in the nation.

“He’s a very good athlete who has great lateral quickness,” Coach Wilde concluded. “That quickness, along with his strength and long arms, helps him to play outstanding defense. He is best in transition. He is a good penetrator, but loves to pull up and knock down the 16-18 foot jumper.”

Hines most likely will get increased interest as Collin County begins the Region V Playoffs on March 5. TheHurricaneAlert.com will keep you abreast of his recruitment, as he and his teammates hope to advance through regional play and on to the National Junior College Tournament.

You will notice this was dated February 23rd. I didn't add this to cause concern, but to show that Hines chose to sign with us over some percieved better schools.
