That's a silly claim.  In their last class, they had zero commits from Alabama: https://247sports.com/college/arkansas-state/Season/2019-Football/Commits/

They had 5 commits from Texas.

Where did you hear this claim?

Saw it in writing a year or so ago. I didn't make it up, just threw it out as a reason Arkansas State would probably prefer to move east if given a choice. However, it sure hurt U of A's recruiting in Texas when they joined SEC.Out of site, out of mind.

By the by, just checked A-State's roster. I counted 6 players from Texas as well as 5 from Alabama. Looked like they do well in Arkansas.

Boils down to 2 choices:

Want easy road trips or want to be in a conference that has a higher national profile?

Both and the MWC ain't it! Just say no to the Mountain West! AAC would do the job.

If I had my choice between the AAC and MWC. Of course I would take the AAC. But that wasn’t the topic of this thread.

The two choices are choosing between MWC (higher profile) and CUSA (easy road trips)

The MWC could help North Texas in so many ways.  It might also help us get that mythical baseball team.

Please list the ways.

I think, if anything, it would make it a little harder to get baseball going here, since that would be another team with little income flying West a lot.
But, Football and Basketball are still the kings of the collegiate sports world, and the MWC would be a big jump in competition/prestige from where we are currently for both of those sports.  Still worth it to table baseball a little longer in order to put football/basketball there, in my opinion.

Resurrecting this old thread to post this:
https://www.yahoo.com/sports/how-could-california-state-university-systems-decision-to-go-online-only-in-fall-affect-college-football-032940912.html

If those 3 California State schools cannot field a football team, and the MWC should decide they still want to play... What if they looked to Texas to fill those 3 spots?  Would y'all be on board with NT, UTEP, and UTSA or Rice heading West together?   Then, whenever those schools decided to rejoin, they could, and then bring in the UTSA/Rice leftover to make a balanced 16-team conference?

If students are not on campus I don’t see any fall athletics. It is not only a health issue, but also a liability issue for the University. You can’t say it is to dangerous for some and not for others.

If it's a path to the MWC or the AAC, hell yes!

Definitely. Hard to imagine we’d be able to get out of our scheduling commitments for the year.

UNT, Rice and UTEP to the Mountain West in an eastern division with the IH-25 schools.  UNM, Air Force, CSU and Wyoming.  5 of the schools are in the Mountain Time Zone which is only an hour difference.  More money, more exposure and a higher level of competition.  We might have to add La Tech to balance it out.  Or wait until the big 12 blows up and see what happens.

So, what do we bring to the MWC? Not but a handful of fans will make any road trips. We are basically a non factor in DFW media market. TCU and SMU hold recruiting edge. If the MWC wanted a presence in DFW you would think they would try to schedule OOC football and basketball games in the Metroplex. The MWC Fan Forum posters say they would like to dump SJSU and football only Hawaii. They would like to add one or two high powered basketball program but NMSU is not good enough. We keep talking about what the MWC would do for us [aka Big West?] What can we bring to the table? What can we do for them?

Can we please stop the Big West/Mountain West comparisons?

Well the travel is about the same, and our fans have about the same level of interest.

The Mountain West is one of the most spaced out conferences in the country. Not like the other teams in our conference are driving distance from each other for large numbers of opposing fans to go to each game. University of Nevada is about a 15 hour drive to Albuquerque and Laramie. Denton is closer to University of Wyoming, UNM, Air Force, and Colorado State than those California schools are. We aren’t less appealing geographically than other options, even from a fan travel standpoint.

As far as what we offer, we have a football program that should be competitive in this conference on paper and a really strong basketball program to add to a really strong basketball conference. We can be that strong basketball add that NMSU would be, while being a far more appealing option from a football standpoint.

Only it has more respect, and better quality teams.
