I was talking to a guy I know who played LB at SMU just after the Death Penalty. I asked him if he pays any attention to SMU much these days and he was quite frank in saying no. I asked why and he said, "Look, I went to SMU when we were in the SWC. I played Texas, Arkansas, A&M, Tech, and Baylor, plus teams like Notre Dame in OOC play. I've tried to care after that, but its impossible to care about anyone on our schedule except for TCU and maybe Houston." I told him that as a North Texas guy, this was a big game every year and we have it about as good as we ever have had it, conference wise, as well as playing SMU every year. He didn't even know we played them in OOC. He just shook his head and said, "And people wonder why nobody follows SMU anymore..."

Arrogance meeting apathy...only thing I agreed with him about was that this was an incredible fall from the top of FBS to not even being thought of anymore in the college football world. Couldn't have happened to a better group of a$$holes.

In the past 10 seasons SMU has played:

Annual Conference games vs..

Houston

Navy

Rice (till 2012)

 

Non Conference vs:

Baylor

Tcu

Texas A&M

Texas Tech

Michigan

Pitt

Washington St

Army

Anyone who chose to walk away from their school over that schedule was never going to support in the first place.

I don’t understand the animosity towards SMU.  

Every year they provide six schools with a home game in the heart of Dallas where they can play in front of DFW recruits.

If that’s not humanitarianism, I don’t know what is.

Our record against SMU since 1990 : 4-5

Before 1990: 2-26

They act like they’ve dominated us the last 3 decades when that hasn’t been the case.

If your glory days are when you had to cheat to win...

...they weren't glory days.

The suck of it is that there are decent people that are going to school there, playing in their athletics teams and are basically being given a bum rap because some rich dudes wanted to cheat the system over 30 years ago. It's as if a sudden short term gain isn't worth it.

Have to credit to SMU for maintaining a "perceived" importance in the college football landscape - much better job than Rice. This also goes to show what a good job Wren and Seth are doing to change the culture (both real and perceived) at North Texas.  Continue building the foundation so we create a program where we will be successful regardless of the leaders.

I can't even think about football and SMU right now. I'm one of 10,000 people without power since Sunday. 

To put that into perspective, that's roughly 4x an average SMU home crowd.
