The debate team is great and I hope it continues to have success. I just wanted to point out that you brought them up in an eSports thread and I felt your post could be interpreted as though there was some link between the two. You clarified that so I'm on the same page with you. You are obviously a supporter of theirs and I applaud you for that, GMG!

I didn't even know about intercollegiate esports before i read this article. I find the premise interesting because my son is an avid gamer and may some day be willing to risk the Big Five....

but...I was shocked when i first read (misread) the subject title as UNT escorts program announces $20,000 in scholarships

escorts? Are we really going to offer scholarships for that?

They should call is something other than Esports...why? Simply put...it "ain't no sport".  Why don't we also look at scholarships for tattoo artists? call it Tat-Sports.  Why not? About as close to a sport as electronic games. Just saying.  Now, if this program is somehow integrated into a UNT program that develops video games and other on-line programs, well and good.  If it is a stand-alone "team", then..meh, not so much.

Yes, and they are not the only one who Awards scholarships for such endeavors. Just like debate I would say. I guess, if donors want to establish scholarships for “gamers”, then so be it. I just would like to see it called what it is...video game contests...not sports. As I said “it ain’t no sport” and it should not be called or considered as such.... In my opinion, of course.

There is nothing you could ever do to hurt my feelings bud, you're only showing your age with a GIF that doesn't even make sense.

Guys... 20 million people watched the league of legends championship in 2014, and that was five years ago. That's more than both the world series and the nba championship. There is a reason Amazon bought twitch. There is a reason smart universities are investing in esports. If even one graduate from this program goes on to join a pro team and starts taking home big paychecks I think there's a good chance he would be inclined to give back to the university. However, since you guys have your views 100% shaped by the television instead of your own personal experiences this just makes your head spin.

It's 2019. It's not 1974. This isn't intergender bathrooms we are talking about here, this is our university making a smart move to get with the times. You guys should try it.

Never heard of league of legends.

But it sounds like you actually did get your feelings hurt?

Don’t,.....it’s just our opinion.

I’ve wasted more money on video games than I ever care to admit over the years and for everything I’ve seen it’s a waste of time and money.  In fact...that’s exactly what it’s for...wasting time and money as a luxury to relax and pass the time,....similar to laying around and eating and drinking and sleeping all day.

I wouldn’t recommend a person to lay around and eat and drink and sleep all day just like I wouldn’t recommend them spend untold hours laying around eating and playing video games.  But that’s exactly what more and more kids are doing these days and it’s an extremely unhealthy lifestyle and I believe our university shouldn’t be encouraging that lifestyle.
