I didn't mention that UTA had been dropped in my post, it is generally poor form to throw dirt on another school. Since you brought it up, UTA did in fact get dropped and they had to file a protest to get reinstated.  I'm sure you can imagine that they won't go on a PR tour touting that information.

Our condolences to your basketball program.

All kidding aside the more T1 schools in Texas the better, I think the state generally gets overlooked in higher ed.

Well said.

Not sure how I would want to advertise being on the same level as UTEP.

We all have our fun biases and hates, but the more R1 institutions the better for Texas, which is my primary loyalty.  I found the newly released R1 list by going to the new website.  In any case, you are either R1 or not.

UTEP, btw, has a pretty neat campus.  It is easy to knock them for their remoteness and student access, but they are serving a very particular geography.  They do a lot of research, which is why they were added.  It surprised me when I saw the amount of their annual research expenditures.

UNT made it on the strength of number of PhDs produced annually,  not so much on annual research spending, but we will likely see that number rise in future years.

UTEP has worked very aggressively on their research partnerships. IMO, they have benefited well playing to their opportunities/strengths.

Being from El Paso, I am quite happy.

Having gone to UNT, I'm ecstatic about telling anyone with an SMU degree that they should go to graduate school at a real university like UTD if they want to get into our PhD programs.
